10° in Barga this morning and it feels as though the autumn is on the way out and maybe winter is ready to come down from the mountains.
It’s probably that we are just not yet used to walking around with jackets and scarves – it’s probably the first weekend of the year but there is a definite change in the air.
Most of the grapes on the mountainside around barga have already been picked for the vendemmia and there is already the unmistakable tang of smoke in the air as some fires have already been with lit to warm some of the chilly houses.
As it is the second Sunday of the month the traditional monthly market in Barga Vecchia was in full swing this morning and there too were signs of the change as woollen hats and gloves were on sale, Halloween costumes and the first appearance of Christmas decorations arriving on one of two stalls.
