From the barganews archives of 2013 – Back in 2005 I started work on a series of paintings based around a small group of people who have been living and working in Barga for generations, but now as a group are close to extinction – the nuns of Barga. I wrote an article then which included the following text:
Their numbers can be counted on one hand, and they always seemed to move around in a group.
Just what is the collective noun for a group of nuns .. a flock of nuns, a gaggle .. a pride maybe ?
Very rarely is it possible to spot a single nun in the streets of the city.
The main group comprising of three very aged women, all diminutive in stature, and all three of formidable character.
Local residents, describe these three nuns, as always appearing aged. It would seem that nobody can remember them as young women. And there lies the problem, the young Italian women are no longer becoming nuns.
It is very difficult to find recent data on the precise number of nuns living and working in Italy but their numbers are decreasing rapidly and even the new novices coming in from Africa and Asia can no longer fill the gap.
Shortly, this compact group of dark clad women moving ghost like through the streets of Barga will be just that – ghostly memories
In 2012, Suor Carmelina died in Rome in her retirement home at the Casa Madre delle Suore Giuseppine di Chambéry where she has been resting since 2008. (article here)
Suor Carmelina Ippolito was for more than 60 years the driving force behind the Conservatorio di Santa Elisabetta here in Barga Vecchia.
The convent was founded by Michele Turignoli of Barga in the 15th Century for young women who wished to enter the Third Order of St Francis. In 1787, it was transformed into a school for young girls (conservatorio) by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo who ordered it to be amalgamated with the Dominican convent in Barga situated near the church of the Santissima Annunziata on the street now known as Via di Mezzo.
The school, which was run by nuns of the Order of St. Joseph, provided an education for girls from less fortunate families, who could study there right up to the level of a teaching certificate.
Giovanni Pascoli defined the school as a: “…fucina di maestrine di montagna…” (a forge for hilltown teachers).
This week comes the official news that the remaining nuns will shortly be leaving Barga for good as after 101 years in a presence in Barga, the Convent it to be shut and the remaining nuns to return to Casaletto in Rome.

C’era già nell’aria da un po’ di tempo ed ora è arrivata la notizia ufficiale.
Le nostre suore lasciano la comunità di Barga.
Lo scorso anno abbiamo celebrato solennemente il centenario della loro presenza tra noi ed ora in questa estate 2013, è arrivata la decisione definitiva: la comunità delle suore Giuseppine, presenti a Barga fin dal 1912, ritorna a Roma al Casaletto, dove già altre sorelle in questi anni si sono trasferite.
Imotivi di questa sofferta decisione sono facilmente intuibili: segnano profondamente la Chiesa oggi e la caratterizzeranno per i prossimi anni.
La crisi vocazionale costringe molte comunità religiose a chiudere importanti esperienze e ad aprire nuove comunità dedicando la missione dei diversi Istituti Religiosi nel mondo e nella chiesa di oggi, ad altre attenzioni..
Così vengono trasferite oppure, per l’età che avanza, si radunano nei luoghi dove un’assistenza premurosa si prende cura di loro, dopo tanti anni di servizio svolto nelle strutture e nelle comunità sparse in tante nazioni.
Sconcerto, ma anche gratitudine per il loro servizio secolare svolto, perchè anche a Barga sono state un punto di riferimento importante non solamente per le attività religiose, ma anche educative per intere generazioni di bambini, di adolescenti, di giovani, ragazze e famiglie.
Una preziosa e silenziosa testimonianza di adesione concreta e totale a Gesù Cristo, nel servizio di apostolato delVangelo e nella carità. Ci auguriamo che nella comunità parrocchiale e nelle famiglie non vada disperso tutto quello che hanno da loro ricevuto.
Per questo e per tante altre singole esperienze personali, vogliamo rinnovare il nostro grazie alle suore, assicurando loro il nostro perenne ricordo e la nostra costante preghiera.
E’ con un profondo senso di riconoscenza, ma anche con la tristezza nel cuore, che rivolgo loro il saluto a nomemio personale e dell’ intera comunità di Barga che si apprestano a lasciare.
Sono molte le persone, bimbi, ragazzi, giovani, adulti e famiglie che ricorderanno i nomi e gli insegnamenti delle nostre suore:Suor Candida, Suor Flora, Suor Chiara, SuorMelania, Suor Concettina, Suor Giuseppina e Suor Barbara; queste son le ultime tra noi, insieme a molte altre che restano nella memoria e nel cuore di ciascuno, come SuorValeria, Suor Biagina , Suor Ernestina, Suor Leandra, Suor Ersilia ,Suor Eufrosina, Suor Gilda e Suor Carmelina e le altre che riposano nel nostro Cimitero, hanno scelto di riposare qui, in quella terra dove hanno lavorato nella vigna del Signore, gettato il seme del Vangelo.
Rimarranno sempre nella memoria per il bene compiuto da tutte coloro che sono passate dalla nostra comunità: nell’asilo Donnini o nel Conservatorio Santa Elisabetta.
Ci ritroveremo alla Celebrazione del 4 Agosto, alle ore 17.30, in San Rocco per ringraziare queste nostre sorelle nell’Eucaristia.
Poi le saluteremo con una cena insieme al Santa Elisabetta, chi desidera partecipare si dovrà prenotare entro il 31 luglio, presso don Stefano a don Federico,con la spesa di 15 euro.
