iBarga – Connecting Barga Vecchia to the Digital World

Nearly twenty years ago Barga became one of the first historic centres in Tuscany to be connected to the internet using QR codes and mobile phones.

Throughout Barga Vecchia small white ceramic tiles were installed at key locations — restaurants, bars, churches, piazzas, statues and many other places of interest. Each tile carries its own QR code, linking visitors directly to information about that specific place.

By simply pointing a smartphone camera at the code, visitors can instantly access historical notes, photographs and useful information about what they are looking at. Scan the tile at the Duomo and you will find details about the cathedral; scan one outside Palazzo Pancrazi and information about the building appears on your phone.

What began as an experimental project almost two decades ago has quietly become a pioneering example of how a historic city can connect its past with modern digital technology.

iBarga – Barga Vecchia collegata al mondo digitale

Quasi vent’anni fa Barga è diventata uno dei primi centri storici della Toscana ad essere collegato a internet tramite QR code e telefoni cellulari.

In tutto il centro storico di Barga Vecchia sono state installate piccole piastrelle di ceramica bianca in punti chiave — ristoranti, bar, chiese, piazze, statue e molti altri luoghi di interesse. Ogni piastrella riporta un QR code unico che collega direttamente a informazioni su quel luogo specifico.

È sufficiente puntare la fotocamera dello smartphone verso il codice per accedere immediatamente a informazioni storiche, fotografie e curiosità su ciò che si sta osservando. Scansionando la piastrella sul Duomo appariranno le informazioni sulla cattedrale; scansionando quella davanti a Palazzo Pancrazi compariranno notizie sull’edificio.

Quello che era nato quasi vent’anni fa come un progetto sperimentale è diventato un esempio pionieristico di come una città storica possa collegare il proprio passato con le tecnologie digitali del presente.
