San Cristoforo di Barga – La Statua di Legno nella Luce e nel Tempo
Un’esposizione di Keane In collaborazione con la Parrocchia del Duomo di San Cristoforo, Barga Luogo: Duomo di San Cristoforo, Barga All’interno del Duomo di San Cristoforo a Barga, l’artista irlandese Keane presenta una nuova e suggestiva esposizione dedicata al santo patrono della città. “San Cristoforo di Barga – La Statua di Legno nella Luce e nel Tempo” esplora l’antica statua lignea di San Cristoforo non solo come icona religiosa, ma come presenza viva, modellata da secoli di luce, ritualità e sguardi umani.
Da quasi quarant’anni, Keane racconta attraverso la pittura le persone e le trasformazioni di Barga. In questo nuovo ciclo di opere, il suo sguardo si rivolge verso l’estremità del Duomo, dove la monumentale figura di San Cristoforo domina l’abside — testimone silenzioso di fede, tempo e cambiamento.
«Dalla sua posizione più consueta, dietro l’altare maggiore, San Cristoforo volge lo sguardo attraverso le monumentali porte del Duomo verso l’orizzonte occidentale.
Quando il tempo lo permette, i tramonti spettacolari delle Alpi Apuane avvolgono la statua in un raggio di luce eterea che da generazioni possiede un significato mistico per i barghigiani. Keane ha dotato una delle sue immagini di un software luminoso che riproduce in modo sorprendente questa carezza di luce.» — Frank Viviano
Allestita all’interno della cattedrale stessa, l’esposizione invita i visitatori a vivere le opere nello spazio che le ha ispirate — un raro incontro tra arte e devozione, tra pittore e luogo.
Il Duomo è sempre aperto ed è possibile visitare queste opere in esposizione.

San Cristoforo di Barga – The Wooden Statue in Light and Time An exhibition by Keane
In collaboration with the Parrocchia del Duomo di San Cristoforo, Barga Venue: Duomo di San Cristoforo, Barga Inside the Duomo di San Cristoforo in Barga, Irish artist Keane presents an evocative new exhibition dedicated to the city’s patron saint. “San Cristoforo di Barga – The Wooden Statue in Light and Time” explores the ancient wooden statue of Saint Christopher not simply as a religious icon, but as a living presence shaped by centuries of light, ritual, and human attention.
For nearly forty years, Keane has chronicled the people and transformations of Barga through his paintings. In this new series, his focus turns to the far end of the cathedral, where the monumental figure of Saint Christopher dominates the apse — a silent witness to faith, time, and change.
“From his more familiar post behind the main altar, San Cristoforo gazes straight through the Duomo’s monumental doors toward the western horizon. When weather permits, the Apuan Alps’ dramatic sunsets bathe the statue in a beam of ethereal light that has held mystical significance for generations of Barghigiani. Keane has outfitted one of his images with lighting software that strikingly replicates this luminous caress” – — Frank Viviano
Installed within the cathedral itself, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the works in the space that inspired them — a rare encounter between art and devotion, between painter and place.
The Duomo is always open, and these works can be viewed at any time.
