The Misericordia of Barga at the Vatican Audience with Pope Leo XIV
This morning, representatives of the Misericordia del Barghigiano were present in St Peter’s Square for the papal audience with Pope Leo XIV — an occasion that brought both pride and deep emotion to all involved.
During the gathering, the group presented three gifts to the Vatican:
A plaster statue of Saint Christopher by the artist Keane,
A portrait of Pope Leo XIV titled “Habemus Papae – The Dawn of a New Pontificate” by Barga artist Emanuele Biagioni,
and the banner of the Misericordia, created especially for this historic encounter.
As the Pope passed through the cheering crowd in his Popemobile before beginning the general audience, emotion filled the air.
For the volunteers from Barga, it was a moment that united faith, art, and community — a symbolic gesture linking their city to the heart of the Catholic world.
The Saint Christopher statue — inspired by the wooden original in the Duomo di Barga — represents protection and guidance for travellers.
Its presence in the Vatican stands as a tribute to the people of Barga and their enduring sense of solidarity.

La Misericordia di Barga all’Udienza in Vaticano con Papa Leone XIV
Questa mattina, i rappresentanti della Misericordia del Barghigiano erano presenti in Piazza San Pietro per l’udienza papale con Papa Leone XIV — un’occasione che ha suscitato orgoglio ed emozione in tutti i partecipanti.
Durante l’incontro, il gruppo ha presentato tre doni al Vaticano:
una statua in gesso di San Cristoforo dell’artista Keane,
un ritratto di Papa Leone XIV intitolato “Habemus Papae – L’alba di un nuovo pontificato” dell’artista barghigiano Emanuele Biagioni,
e il gagliardetto della Misericordia, realizzato appositamente per questo storico incontro.
Quando il Papa è passato tra la folla festante sulla sua Papamobile, poco prima dell’inizio dell’udienza generale, l’emozione è stata palpabile. Per i volontari di Barga è stato un momento che ha unito fede, arte e comunità — un gesto simbolico che collega la loro città al cuore del mondo cattolico.
La statua di San Cristoforo — ispirata all’originale lignea conservata nel Duomo di Barga — rappresenta la protezione e la guida per i viandanti. La sua presenza in Vaticano è un omaggio al popolo di Barga e al suo duraturo spirito di solidarietà.
