Monte Forato and the Waiting Game for the Double Sunset
Monte Forato, one of the most distinctive peaks in the Apuan Alps, rises to a little over 1,200 metres. The mountain is crowned by two summits of similar height, but its defining feature lies between them: a spectacular natural arch carved over millennia by water and wind eating away at the limestone. The opening spans roughly 30 metres, while the remaining rock forming the arch is just eight metres thick — dimensions that place it among the largest natural arches in Italy.
Twice each year, on 30–31 January and 11–12 November, this geological curiosity aligns perfectly with the setting sun. When conditions are right, a remarkable optical effect takes place — the doppio tramonto, the double sunset — visible from the steps outside the Duomo in Barga Vecchia.
As the sun sinks behind the distant mountains, it disappears from view, only to shine again a moment later through the stone aperture of Monte Forato before finally setting for good.
It is a brief event, but one that reliably draws a patient crowd to the Duomo, cameras ready, all hoping for clear skies and the right angle of light.

Monte Forato, una delle vette più caratteristiche delle Alpi Apuane, supera di poco i 1.200 metri di altitudine.
La montagna presenta due cime di altezza simile, ma il suo tratto distintivo si trova tra di esse: un magnifico arco naturale scolpito nel corso di millenni dall’azione del vento e dell’acqua sulla roccia calcarea. L’apertura misura circa 30 metri di diametro, mentre lo spessore della roccia che forma l’arco è di appena 8 metri — dimensioni che lo rendono uno dei più grandi archi naturali d’Italia.
Due volte all’anno, il 30–31 gennaio e l’11–12 novembre, questo fenomeno geologico si allinea perfettamente con il sole al tramonto. Quando le condizioni sono favorevoli, si verifica uno spettacolo straordinario — il doppio tramonto — visibile dai gradini del Duomo in Barga Vecchia.
Il sole scende dietro le montagne in lontananza, scompare per un istante e poi riappare attraverso l’apertura di Monte Forato, prima di tramontare definitivamente.
È un momento breve ma affascinante, che ogni anno attira un pubblico paziente al Duomo, in attesa del gioco di luce perfetto.
