New Book Celebrates the Life and Ministry of Don Antonio Pieraccini
A presentation took place this morning in the Duomo in Barga Vecchia of the book Pennellate di vita, dedicated to the memory of Don Antonio Pieraccini, who died three months ago (our article covering his funeral can be seen here).
Don Antonio was not simply a priest of this area—he was one of its own. Born here, he spent much of his life working across the local parishes, becoming a familiar and trusted figure to generations. His presence marked baptisms, weddings, funerals and countless ordinary moments in between. For many in the Duomo this morning, the gathering was not simply the presentation of a book, but another opportunity to remember someone who had been quietly present throughout the course of their lives.
The volume brings together Don Antonio’s own recollections, together with memories from those who knew and worked alongside him during more than five decades of priestly ministry.
Introducing the book, the speakers explained that its purpose was to preserve Don Antonio’s own voice. Rather than simply recounting his life through the memories of others, the book allows readers to hear his own reflections on his experiences as a priest and on the people who shaped his ministry.
One of the most moving addresses came from Don Giovanni, who spoke warmly of the people who had influenced Don Antonio throughout his life.
He recalled the Brazilian bishop who first welcomed the young seminarian over fifty years ago, describing how Don Antonio always remembered the kindness and acceptance he experienced on entering the seminary. That early welcome, Don Giovanni said, helped shape the pastoral style that would become characteristic of Don Antonio throughout his ministry.
Don Giovanni also paid heartfelt tribute to Monsignor Piero Giannini, whom Don Antonio regarded as a father figure after returning from Brazil. He described the deep friendship between the two priests and explained how Don Piero helped Don Antonio establish himself within the Diocese of Pisa and the parish communities of Barga, Renaglio and San Pietro in Campo.
Archbishop Giovanni Paolo Benotto was also remembered with great affection. Don Giovanni recounted how Don Antonio often spoke of the Archbishop’s personal care for his priests and treasured even the smallest gestures of friendship, recalling one occasion when Archbishop Benotto presented him with a book after a celebration in the Cathedral.
Reflecting on the publication itself, Don Giovanni said that its pages are filled with memories, anecdotes and personal stories that reveal not only Don Antonio’s dedication as a priest but also his humanity, warmth and generosity.
Un nuovo libro ricorda la vita e il ministero di Don Antonio Pieraccini
Si è svolta questa mattina nel Duomo di Barga Vecchia la presentazione del libro Pennellate di vita, dedicato alla memoria di Don Antonio Pieraccini, scomparso tre mesi fa (il nostro articolo dedicato al suo funerale è disponibile qui).
Don Antonio non era semplicemente un sacerdote di questa terra: era uno di noi. Nato qui, ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita al servizio delle parrocchie della zona, diventando una presenza familiare e un punto di riferimento per intere generazioni. Ha accompagnato la comunità nei battesimi, nei matrimoni, nei funerali e in tanti momenti della vita quotidiana. Per molti dei presenti nel Duomo questa mattina, l’incontro non è stato soltanto la presentazione di un libro, ma anche un’occasione per ricordare una persona che aveva accompagnato con discrezione il cammino della loro vita.
Il volume raccoglie i ricordi dello stesso Don Antonio insieme alle testimonianze di quanti lo hanno conosciuto e hanno condiviso con lui oltre cinquant’anni di ministero sacerdotale.
Nel presentare il libro, i relatori hanno spiegato che l’obiettivo dell’opera è quello di conservare la voce autentica di Don Antonio. Più che raccontare la sua vita attraverso i ricordi degli altri, il volume permette ai lettori di ascoltare le sue riflessioni personali sulla propria esperienza sacerdotale e sulle persone che hanno segnato il suo cammino.
Uno degli interventi più toccanti è stato quello di Don Giovanni, che ha ricordato con affetto le figure che hanno maggiormente influenzato la vita di Don Antonio.
Ha parlato del vescovo brasiliano che accolse il giovane seminarista oltre cinquant’anni fa, ricordando come Don Antonio raccontasse spesso la gentilezza e il senso di accoglienza che aveva trovato entrando in seminario. Secondo Don Giovanni, proprio quell’esperienza contribuì a formare lo stile pastorale che avrebbe caratterizzato Don Antonio per tutta la sua vita sacerdotale.
Don Giovanni ha poi reso un sentito omaggio a Monsignor Piero Giannini, che Don Antonio considerava una figura paterna dopo il suo ritorno dal Brasile. Ha ricordato il profondo rapporto di amicizia che li legava e ha spiegato come Don Piero lo abbia aiutato a inserirsi nella Chiesa italiana, nella comunità di Barga e successivamente nelle parrocchie di Renaglio e San Pietro in Campo.
Anche l’Arcivescovo Giovanni Paolo Benotto è stato ricordato con grande affetto. Don Giovanni ha raccontato come Don Antonio parlasse spesso della vicinanza e dell’attenzione che l’Arcivescovo riservava ai suoi sacerdoti, conservando con particolare emozione anche i gesti più semplici di amicizia, come il dono di un libro ricevuto dopo una celebrazione nel Duomo.
Parlando del libro, Don Giovanni ha sottolineato come le sue pagine siano ricche di ricordi, episodi e aneddoti che raccontano non solo la dedizione di Don Antonio al suo ministero, ma anche la sua profonda umanità, la sua cordialità e la sua generosità.
