Don Stefano says farewell to Barga
The Duomo was filled for a particularly significant Mass as the parish community gathered to say farewell to Don Stefano, marking the end of his time as parish priest in Barga and the beginning of a new chapter in his ministry.
It was a farewell which went well beyond the formal departure of a priest. During his years in Barga, Don Stefano had become closely involved in the life of the community, working with different generations, parish groups, young people and families, as well as maintaining strong links with associations and institutions across the city.
At the end of the Mass, the deacon spoke on behalf of the community, looking back over those years and describing Don Stefano’s presence as tireless and dedicated, but never intrusive — a priest who had tried to listen, encourage and recognise the contribution and talents of others.
Particular emphasis was placed on his work with children and young people, creating opportunities for them to participate and grow, and on the many parish activities which developed under his guidance. There were also memories of celebrations, gatherings and trips which had created moments of friendship and shared experience away from the more formal life of the church.
Another important part of Don Stefano’s time in Barga had been his interest in culture and in the artistic heritage of the churches entrusted to his care. The farewell recalled his love of art and his attention to preserving and enhancing the historic and religious heritage contained within them.
His ability to work beyond the walls of the church was also remembered. Collaboration with local institutions, associations and different parts of Barga’s social and cultural life had been a recurring feature of his years here.
The words addressed to him at the end of the service recognised that his departure would leave a considerable space in the community, while stressing that the relationships formed during his time in Barga would continue.
“You will remain part of our history and of our affection,” was the message, together with the assurance that, despite the distance, Don Stefano would not truly be far away.
The farewell concluded with thanks for what he had built, for the paths he had opened and, in the words of the address, “for the good that you have sown among us.”
For Don Stefano, it was the last Mass of this chapter of his life in Barga. For the many people gathered inside the Duomo, it was an opportunity to acknowledge how much had happened during those years — and simply to say thank you and wish him well for the road ahead.

Il Duomo era gremito per una Messa particolarmente significativa, durante la quale la comunità parrocchiale si è riunita per salutare Don Stefano, segnando la conclusione del suo periodo come parroco a Barga e l’inizio di un nuovo capitolo del suo ministero.
È stato un saluto che è andato ben oltre la semplice partenza di un sacerdote. Durante i suoi anni a Barga, Don Stefano è diventato parte integrante della vita della comunità, lavorando con diverse generazioni, gruppi parrocchiali, giovani e famiglie, e mantenendo allo stesso tempo uno stretto rapporto con associazioni e istituzioni della città.
Al termine della Messa, il diacono ha parlato a nome della comunità, ripercorrendo questi anni e descrivendo la presenza di Don Stefano come instancabile e dedicata, ma mai invadente: un sacerdote che ha cercato di ascoltare, incoraggiare e valorizzare il contributo e i talenti di ciascuno.
Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata al suo lavoro con i bambini e i giovani, ai quali ha offerto occasioni di partecipazione e di crescita, e alle numerose attività parrocchiali sviluppatesi sotto la sua guida. Sono stati ricordati anche i tanti momenti di festa, gli incontri e le gite che hanno creato occasioni di amicizia, fraternità e condivisione al di fuori della vita più strettamente religiosa.
Un altro aspetto importante degli anni di Don Stefano a Barga è stato il suo interesse per la cultura e per il patrimonio artistico delle chiese affidate alla sua cura. Nel saluto è stato ricordato il suo amore per l’arte e la sua costante attenzione alla tutela e alla valorizzazione del patrimonio storico e religioso custodito al loro interno.
È stata inoltre sottolineata la sua capacità di lavorare anche al di fuori delle mura della chiesa. La collaborazione con le istituzioni, le associazioni e le diverse realtà della vita sociale e culturale di Barga è stata infatti una caratteristica costante del suo periodo in città.
Le parole rivoltegli al termine della celebrazione hanno riconosciuto che la sua partenza lascerà un vuoto importante nella comunità, sottolineando però che i rapporti costruiti durante questi anni continueranno.
«Resterai parte della nostra storia e del nostro affetto», è stato il messaggio rivolto a Don Stefano, insieme alla certezza che, nonostante la distanza, non sarà mai veramente lontano.
Il saluto si è concluso con un ringraziamento per ciò che ha costruito, per le strade che ha aperto e, come è stato detto durante l’intervento, «per il bene che hai seminato tra noi».
Per Don Stefano è stata l’ultima Messa di questo capitolo della sua vita a Barga. Per le tante persone riunite nel Duomo è stata l’occasione per guardare a quanto è stato fatto in questi anni e, soprattutto, per dire semplicemente grazie e augurargli buon cammino.
