Broad Band internet connection for all .. including those people who live out on the mountainsides around Barga ? Seems too good to be true but following on from a discussion in the Forum, Towler stumbled upon an article in a newspaper back in July which talked about the possibility of wireless broadband coming to this area.
Internet Veloce– There are 32 communes affected by the work in question and Eutelia has set aside 130 days of work in each zone for full completion. It begins on the 1st of September in the rural areas of Lucca, Capannori and Barga. Then, from the middle of September, Coreglia, Pieve Fosciana and Pietrasanta. Then, between October and December, Borgo a Mozzano, Castelnuovo Garfagnana, Seravezza, Minucciano and Stazzema.
From the beginning of 2009 until the end of spring 2010, Eutelia will link up all the other communes: Fosciandora, Gallicano, Villa Basilica, Bagni di Lucca, Castiglione Garfagnana, Massarosa, Giuncugnano, Sillano, San Romano Garfagnana, Altopascio, Montecarlo, Porcari, Camporgiano, Piazza al Serchio, Vagli di Sotto, Careggine, Villa Collemandina, Molazzana, Vergemoli, Fabbriche di Vallico and Pescaglia.
There then followed further heated discussions on the forum as to whether or not the article was true, whether a company called Eutelia actually existed and as to just what was the likelihood of wireless broadband being available for those people were still forced to use a slow modem to get onto the net. As Towler so eloquently put it ” What do you think, lads? Am I making this up? Could it possibly be that I’ll be able to read the Daily Sport in the morning in less than an hour?” – Forum here
Two days ago, was the second sighting in the wild of any kind of journalistic response to the possibility of broadband in the rural areas .. once again the news was almost hidden away in the “News in Brief” section of the newspaper informing us that this Friday at nine o’clock in the Misericordia in Castelvecchio Pascoli there will be a presentation of the broadband project. The public are invited to attend.
And the public did attend, nearly 100 people crammed into the Misericordia rooms to listen to representatives of the Eutelia company put forward a presentation of their website and their proposals for the new service on offer.
Wireless Internet will be beamed out across the whole area. Customers wishing to join this service must have a small antenna installed on their roof which will be attached to a small black box and from there a cable to their computer. Two main services are being offered to private and businesses, ranging from a flat rate, unlimited use for €20 a month or two euros an hour of people who do not want a constant connection. There is however a 60 Euro activation charge for both services ( this does include installation of the aerial and box) plus Euro 9,90 a month rent for the black box. There is also the possibility of buying the box and so avoiding a rental – a spokesman at the meeting this evening mentioned the price of around Euros 200.
So what are you getting for that money? – according to the representatives this evening – they will supply you with a downstream of 2M and upstream of 256 kb and a guaranteed bandwidth of 100 kb.
As to when the service will be online ….. slightly more difficult to pin down. There was talk of the service operational by the end of this year but no precise date was actually given.

Federico Gelli.

Thank you very much to the barganews staff for tracking and reporting this info.
The question it raises is how does the cost compare to that which one has if one lives in the city, or near enough for broadband access without satellite, inasmuch as we are rapidly approaching a fast internet imperative. For example, an aspect of the controversial Gelmini reform included textbook downloads to save the state on the cost of publication, and anecdotal evidence from a friend who had to literally hang out her third storey window to enroll her daughter in the state university system. In addition, there are obligatory circumstances in which one must register on-line for certain international travel, for instance.
These situations, once again, put the onus on the citizen with a real cost of living increase, and now if we live in the country will we have to pay more than those who do not for fast internet access?
Thanks again, very much, for covering this all.
