For the third year running the artist Cristina Balzarini was back in Barga recently with examples of her latest work – finely drawn decorated porcelain using the third firing method.
She was exhibiting her work at Casa Cordati and offering a brief course in Painting on Porcelain for students willing to spend time in learning some of the secrets behind this exacting technique.
The term refers to the way they are made, which includes two firings, the first to produce the base or biscuit, the second to vitrify the glaze and set the decor that is applied to the crude glaze. The glazed pieces are then decorated and this decoration has to be fixed by being fired for a third time – hence the term “third firing”.
Questo tipo di decorazione detta anche “sopra vetrina” si ottiene applicando i colori sull’oggetto già invetriato “Cristallinato” e quindi sottoposto a due precedenti cotture: dopo la decorazione l’oggetto sarà sottoposto ad una successiva cottura (o più) ad una temperatura media di 760°C / 780°C. ( ogni colore ha una sua ottimale temperatura di vetrificazione )
I colori usati sono essenzialmente degli ossidi metallici con aggiunta di un fondente e si presentano come polveri che si miscelano con resine e olii in buona parte ottenuti dalla distillazione di vegetali.
Decoro di porcellana dicesi anche “Terzo fuoco”.
Si dice anche terzo fuoco perché essa passa attraverso tre fasi:
Una prima cottura del biscotto grezzo, dopo la smaltatura per poter effettuare
la decorazione e dopo la decorazione vera e propria.
La porcellana risponde alle esigenze della mano ferma e precisa.
La precisione è una cosa fondamentale da acquisire.
