The news which has been circulating for the past week or so concerning the possibility that five dogs have been poisoned in Barga Vecchia was confirmed this afternoon with the arrival of three members of the newly formed Polizia Ecozoolia who were here in Barga for an official tour of inspection of the area around San Felice.
As you can hear in the interview below (in Italiano) the autopsy on one of the dogs has revealed poison.
They brought with them two specially trained sniffer dogs, a labrador and a beagle who both independently and unequivocally pointed out four definite places where there had been recently poison.
For the three dogs including a puppy nothing could be done to save them, two of which died within 20 seconds of eating the poison. Strychnine is now looking to be the most likely suspect.
The squad then moved on to Barga Giardino the presumed site of the other two poisonings.
There was considerable anger amongst the local population once the news of these cowardly attacks on the animal population became public.
Dog owners in the area are advised to keep their dogs on a lead at all times.
