To
the right of the Duomo, at the far side of the Aringo, is the Palazzo
Pretorio, the historic seat of the Florentine Podesta` (Mayors of
Barga, appointed by Florence), as shown by the many Florentine coats
of arms on the facade. The building, which has been considerably
restored, is now a public museum with geological, paleontological,
archeological and historical exhibits of the region.

The Palazzo Pretorio |
Also
on this same side there used to be a building between the Palazzo
Pretorio and the end of the Duomo, as can be seen from old photographs.
This would have blocked the magnificent view which we have today
over the Valley of the Latriani and the
Appenines beyond.

On
the left side of the Duomo is the area known as the Avelli, which
served once as a burial ground and where at one time, up against
the wall of the Duomo, the Presbytery was located. It is now on
the Piazza Beato Michele, underneath the Aringo.
The
Duomo itself is an impressive structure, well isolated from any
urban growth which might limit its architectural integrity or interrupt
its purity of line, features that help to make it such a unique
example of religious architecture.
