This
guide offers four itineraries of the historic centre of Barga and
two more of places which, although
outside
the town, have very close ties with it. Names of streets, buildings
and works of art have not normally been translated but a glossary
is provided which gives the English version if it exists.
Itineraries
n° 1 and n° 2 lead up to the area known as the Aringo, which
is situated at the top of the hill in front of the medieval Duomo,
the cathedral of Barga. This monument is a 'must' for all visitors,
and is described in detail in n° 3. Itinerary n° 4 goes
to other parts of the city that do not end up at the Duomo unless
you cut through one of the lanes or passageways connecting to Via
di Mezzo, the main road which is described in n° 2.
Itinerary
n°5 is about the outlying district known as the Fornacetta which
is northeast of the historic centre. Itinerary n°6 goes southwest
to the church of St. Francis and the Villa Biondi, two important
landmarks in the past and recent history of Barga respectively.
