Now
we turn to Via di Borgo, which starts below at the Largo "Emilio
Biondi", where the third gate to old Barga was situated until
1833, and then leads up the hill to the heart of the old town.

Up
this road, on the left, you come to the Piazza Galletto, named after
a famous Barga man of arms from the 16th Century. On the right,
facing the piazza, is the office of the Barga monthly newspaper
"Il Giornale di Barga", founded by Bruno Sereni in 1949
as "the independent voice of unity with the people of Barga
abroad".

Largo Emilio Biondi and the beginning of Via di Borgo. |
Via
di Borgo is quite narrow, but in spite of this, at one time it was
very busy because of the many shops that lined it, and because it
conveniently links up with so many streets in the old town. As we
have seen already, it leads to Via della Fontana and further up,
to Vicolo Orsini and Via Giannetti, and finally ends at Via di Mezzo
and Piazza Salvo Salvi or Piazza del Comune, as discussed in Itinerary
n° 2.
