Barga Jazz Festival 2007 – full program

The BargaJazz_Festival_2007 celebrates its Twentieth Edition with a rich calendar of musical events.

A first series of concerts will take place during July and August with the traditional “Girando alla Tonda/Turn Around” organised by BargaJazz in collaboration with various local town administrations. A real musical journey through the Garfagnana and Serchio Valley to discover places of cultural interest and natural beauty, whilst enjoying concerts of the highest quality. This year the locations chosen are: Sillico, Camporgiano, Sassi, Gioviano, Il Ciocco, Barga, Trassilico and Castiglione di Garfagnana.

As far as the Arranging and Composition for Jazz Orchestra Competition is concerned, the guest of honour will be the Canadian trumpet player Kenny Wheeler, one of the most important contemporary trumpet players as well as one of the foremost composers and arrangers of the last forty years.

Kenny Wheeler together with the BargaJazz Orchestra will play original compositions and arrangements written especially by the competitors, whilst the 19th of August he will present a national first at the Teatro dei Differenti “Kenny Wheeler’s Little Sweet Suite” for 13 elements.
As with each year, the composition is divided into various sections dedicated to: (A) arranging; (B) original compositions; (C) new up and coming composers (in association with the Siena Jazz seminars; (D) new up and coming groups. Sections A, B, and C will take place on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of August at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga. The section dedicated to new up and coming groups will take place on the 20th and 21st of August in the gardens of the “Istituto Superiore di Istruzione” in Barga where the “Luca Flores” prize will be awarded to the best soloist.

Also in Barga on the 17th of August there will be a performance of the MSA “Jazzmania” Big Band from Amsterdam directed by the flautist/saxophonist Peter Guidi. The Big Band is one of the most renown young orchestras from Europe and has won many international prizes. The connection with the Festival is due also to Peter Guidi’s Barga origins – currently he teaches Jazz at the MSA in Amsterdam.

A further three evenings will be dedicated to the “L’Anima Dei Luoghi” project, a multidisciplinary spectacle which will combine the work of the Camporgiano and Sillico Musical Bands, dancers, actors and naturally a jazz group: 30th July in Sillico (Pieve Fosciana), 3rd of August in Camporgiano and the 18th of August in Barga.

Another date not to be missed will be “Barga IN Jazz”, which will take place in the historic Barga old town where more than ten Jazz ensembles and a New Orleans style Street Band will perform in the various piazzas.

An important innovation in the Festival Programme will be the two high-level specialisation courses: the Kenny Wheeler Workshop, from the 20th to the 22nd of August, and the Jazz Orchestra Direction Course conducted by Bruno Tommaso from the 9th to the 13th of August.

Furthermore, from the 17th to the 25th – as during previous editions – EnoJazz, seat of the “Incredible Jam Sessions”, will set-up: an after concert meeting place for musicians and fans
