The second in a series of articles about the progress of the barganews vegetable garden. It actually took us a good deal of time to find a decent plot of land. Finally we have found it. It is in the right place, it has the right amount sun, right amount of shade and probably more important – water is here. There is a small problem with marauding wild animals which means we will have to construct a fence to protect the vegetables but for the moment that is not our most pressing problem.
This is an agricultural area but would you believe that our main problem at the moment is the lack of decent manure ? There are now very few people keeping cows or any other animals for that matter, and so good quality well matured compost is hard to come by but some of this “black gold” has been found thanks to the help of Paolo Lazzarini who has arrived with a tractor full to overflowing with compost from his horses which has now been spread over one of the fields.
We now wait for the help of a tractor later on this week to plough both fields and then we can start to think about just what it is we intend to plant in our garden.
Costs so far for the barganews vegetable garden – Euro 20 (transport compost)
