Bel canto di Barga - Make beautiful music together in a medieval Italian town with more than its share of harmony By Dan Montgomery
Barga, Italy -- I've been obsessing over the Tuscan hilltop town of Barga since my family vacationed there last spring. We loved the place for all the reasons you might expect - the beauty, the people, the architecture, the food, the wine, the history - and one I didn't expect: the music.

I worked at the Theatro dei Differenti in the 1970's as the Technical Director for what was then only a summer opera festival
(Festival Lirico Internationale). I just loved your article. It brought back soooooo many beautiful memories of that most beuatiful of towns and its people.
Say, if the Hunt family still around? I particularly seek news of my friend Gillian Hunt, O.B.E. who founded and ran the festival at that time.

Charlie:
Thanks for the nice comments. I can certainly understand how Barga and the Barghigiani would make an impression that lasts decades.
My family was there for only 10 days or so (minus side trips to other spots), but we very much miss the place.
I'll leave it to others to respond to your question about the Hunt family.

Hello Charlie, I am afraid to tell you that Gillian died a decade ago but her presence is still with us in the shape and form of the Operabarga Festival, these days with her son, Nick at the helm
The Festival 2005 will open on the 16th of July with the main event, the staged world premiere of the recently discovered opera by Antonio Vivaldi Mo(n)tezuma, written in 1733 and until recently believed to have been lost forever.
The production is a joint venture between Opera Barga and the Altstadtherbst Kulturfestival of Dusseldorf where the production will be seen in September 2005.
The dates for this show are the 16 and 17th of July at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga
