This season’s heavy snowfall on the mountains around Barga was probably one of the reasons behind a new project put forward this month by the Rifugio Alpino Giovanni Santi up at Renaio in Loc. La Vetricia. The recently renovated rifugio (article here), which has beds for 15 people, is well frequented during the summer and the wild mushroom – porcini season but it is generally closed during the winter as the roads around it are blocked by the snow. Using the concept of making medicine from poison – the very fact that the roads are blocked with snow is now the central point for this new project. The idea is simple – using those roads for ski di fondo – cross-country skiing
A series ski routes joining up to San Pellegrino and beyond.
