On the roofs of Barga

The long winter months in Barga continue and the spring still looks a long way away but  a short break  in the weather earlier this month meant that vital maintenance work could be carried out on one of the palazzi in Barga Vecchia.

Not once, not twice, but three times over the last couple of years workers have climbed onto the palazzo in an attempt to find the source of a worrisome leaking roof.  Each time they have been convinced that they have found the broken tiles responsible for leaking water into the rooms below, only to find that the next time it rained once more the drips penetrated through to the ceilings below.

Most of the roofs in Barga  are covered in the traditional Cap and Barrel (Coppo su coppo) pattern  of terracotta tile which over the years decay and crumble. This week on their fourth attempt at finding the leaks,  they took the only other possibility of resolving the problem –  start from scratch and all those beautiful terracotta tiles just had to go.
