Presentato a Palazzo Pancrazi dal presidente di Opera Barga, Nicholas Hunt, dal sindaco di Barga, Marco Bonini con la consigliera delegata alla Cultura, Giovanna Stefani, il programma del quarto Corso di alto perfezionamento vocale della Cardiff International Academy of Voice tenuto dal grande tenore gallese di fama mondiale, Dennis O’Neill, riconosciuto come uno dei massimi docenti di tecnica di canto per l’opera italiana. “Si tratta – ha detto Hunt – di un progetto di alto livello, ormai un appuntamento fisso di prestigio, preludio al Festival Opera Barga. Fra l’altro proprio O’Neill ha debuttato nella lirica al Festival Opera Barga nel 1969; un’esperienza che gli è rimasta nel cuore visto che ha rappresentato un momento fondante della sua carriera”.
Questo è sicuramente un evento di spessore per Barga perché coinvolge e porta nella cittadina non solo il tenore O’Neill, ma anche 15 cantanti inseriti nel corso di perfezionamento vocale, giovani professionisti già conosciuti, che hanno cantato sui più importanti palcoscenici mondiali con scritture in grandi teatri come Covent Garden, l’Opera di Vienna, l’Opera di Berlino, l’Opera di Basilea. Studenti che arrivano da ogni angolo del mondo: Sudafrica, Australia, Russia, Inghilterra, Irlanda. Rimarranno a Barga per 20 giorni per preparare una serie di concerti e l’allestimento dell’opera in programma quest’anno al Festival.

Soddisfazione è stata espressa dal primo cittadino e dalla consigliera Stefani: “nel dare il benvenuto a tutti ancora una volta desideriamo sottolineare – hanno detto – l’importanza di ospitare a Barga eventi di così grane rilievo e impatto. E ancora una volta vogliamo esprime il sostegno dell’Amministrazione a questa iniziativa e al Festival Opera Barga”.
Al presidente Hunt è toccata invece la presentazione del programma dei corsi che si terranno fino al 16 maggio. La produzione di punta sarà “L’Ajo nell’imbarazzo” di Gaetano Donizetti, melodramma giocoso in due atti; sarà allestita con i cantanti del corso sotto la regia di Micheal Moxham, giovane regista emergente inglese; scene e costumi sono di Stu-art James, scenografo del teatro dell’Opera di Durban, in Sudafrica.
L’apertura delle serate il 7 maggio con un Concerto di Gala al teatro dei Differenti (ore 21) con musiche di Rossini, Verdi, Mozart, Puccini. Il 9 maggio invece è in programma un Concerto sacro nella splendida cornice della Pieve di Loppia (ore 21) con musiche di Verdi, Pergolesi, Bach, rossigni, Haendel, Mendelssohn. L’Ajo di Donizetti andrà in scena il 13 e 15 maggio al Teatro dei Differenti (ore 21). Tutte le serate sono a ingresso gratuito.
Saranno coinvolte anche le scuole superiori di Barga che durante l’allestimento degli spettacoli potranno partecipare a prove aperte, ma anche vedere il montaggio dei vari eventi lirici. Alla produzione parteciperà anche l’Orchestra Oceani Sonori di Lucca diretta da Philip Thomas, celebre pianista e direttore gallese.

Young opera stars from the University are travelling to ‘the home of opera’ to showcase their talents and to develop their skills by immersing themselves in the culture that inspired the repertoire.
Students from the International Academy of Voice will undertake a three-week residency in the Italian town of Barga where they will perform a gala of operatic arias and ensembles, a sacred music concert, and a full-scale opera – Donizetti’s L’Ajo nell’imbarazzo (The Tutor in a Jam).
An annual event, the residency is an integral part of the Academy schedule. Students are able to build on the performances they undertake in Wales and fully develop their dramatic and interpretative skills. The residency also prepares students for their chosen future careers as they learn, memorise and perform a fully-scaled opera, engaging in the sort of production process that they will encounter in the main opera houses across the world.
Commenting on the residency, Dennis O’Neill, Director of the Academy said: “Italy is considered to be the cradle of opera and the majority of operatic repertoire that opera singers will learn is in the Italian language. As well as giving Academy singers a valuable opportunity to perform, the residency also enables them to immerse themselves in the language and culture with a view to consolidating language skills and fostering a better understanding of the repertoire and culture that inspired it.”
Students stay in the picturesque mountain village of Barga, Tuscany and their performances are centred around the beautiful eighteenth-century theatre, il Teatro dei Differenti. The operatic gala takes place at the theatre on Friday 7th May, followed by the Sacred Music Concert on Sunday 9th May. The opera, Donizetti’s “L’Ajo nell’imbarazzo takes place on the 13th and 15th May.
The residency is run in collaboration with the Academy’s Italian partner Opera Barga and is now in its fourth year. Many of the singers each year are invited back to take part in the Opera Barga Festival, which this year will take place from the 1st to the 10th July. Funded by the Italian state, the Tuscan region and hosted in Barga Council’s Teatro dei Differenti, the festival was specifically set up in 1967 by Peter Hunt and Gillian Armitage to foster the careers of young singers and introduce both the singers and audiences to the vast world of lesser-known Italian opera repertoire.
