Four year ago this month we published an article about how the comune was attempting to solve the problem of pigeons in Barga – that article is here. The main problem was that the pigeons were roosting under the eaves of the roof of Palazzo Pancrazi, the 500 year old town hall building in the centre of Barga Vecchia. Work was then started on putting up physical barriers to keep the pigeons on the move. Strips of light alloy spikes which create a very small visual disturbance to people on the ground but created a very large disturbance for the birds when taking off and landing.
We also noted that it was the second time that these spikes have been used around the outside of the Palazzo Pancrazi to keep the pigeons away – the previous time the birds retaliated by rocking the single plastic lines of spikes until they dropped to the ground. This time they were alloy and containing a series of 5 spikes in a line. The article finished with the following question; Any bets on how long these will last ?
The answer came back very quickly: Seven months, almost to the day that they were expelled from their roosting paces, the pigeons were back in force and settling down in their residence high above the piazza

Four years has now passed and the pigeons are gradually taking over the Palazzo Pancrazi once again and it seems that so far nothing that the Comune can do will stop this problem. A quick tour of the search engines on the net reveals that there are other solutions to this problem, some more drastic that others: pigeon food laced with anti conception drugs, bringing hawks and of course trapping or shooting the pigeons.

Quattro anni fa, proprio nel mese di aprile, barganews.com pubblicò un articolo a proposito del tentativo che il Comune stava mettendo in atto per risolvere la questione dei piccioni che si posavano e nidificavano sotto la gronda di Palazzo Pancrazi.
La soluzione fu quella di installare barriere fisiche composte da barre di metallo con aculei che risultavano quasi invisibili da terra e impedivano ai piccioni di posarsi sui cornicioni, installate in seguito a un analogo tipo di dispositivo con aculei in plastica, che però fu scalzato e fatto cadere a terra dai volatili in brevissimo tempo.
L’articolo sulla seconda istallazione si concludeva con una domanda: Chi sa dire per quanto queste barriere resisteranno? La risposta arrivò piuttosto in fretta, dato che sette mesi dopo che i piccioni erano stati cacciati dai loro “posatoi”, tornarono e colonizzarono il resto della piazza.
Adesso sono passati quattro anni ed i piccioni hanno gradualmente riconquistato Palazzo Pancrazi; sembra che il Comune non possa far niente per risolvere questo problema ma un giro veloce sui motori di ricerca rivela che ci sono altre soluzioni a questo impiccio, alcune però davvero drastiche: si va dal cibo mescolato con anticoncezionali all’introduzione di predatori, fino all’uso di trappole o all’abbattimento.
