An extremely well thought out, constructed and beautifully presented exhibition opened to the public this week in Lucca organised by the association San Cristoforo. It features the work of Carlo Guarienti, both two and three dimensional and all on the theme of the writer Dino Buzzati. Large format panels which hark back to frescoes but with a rich mix of influence and style ranging from the Da Vinci through to De Chirico calling in on Cézanne and Picasso on the way, hanging behind free standing bronzes and smaller sculptures occupying the huge space.
It has to be said that the space that has been created in the middle of Lucca in a de-consecrated church is quite simply stunning. Natural light flooding in from the beautiful round window at the entrance to the church fills the space with light picking out the names chiselled into the marble walls over the centuries and making Carlo Guarienti’s work look as though they were made specifically for this space. They fit into the space perfectly in tone, colour, dimension and stillness……. and then something strange happens, the light gradually changes, its moving, not constant, not the same. What was in shadow is now gradually picked out in light, and then just as the viewer becomes accustomed to it, the light changes once again and instead the background becomes once more visually important. Its a bit like time speeding up and then slowing down again as the sun light sweeps across the space, but it’s subtle and so well done that it takes some time for the penny to drop that it’s not natural light but instead a very sophisticated lighting system installed into the high ceiling of the space which has been programmed to change and evolve over time.

As the mayor of a Lucca pointed out in his opening speech at the inauguration, the association San Cristoforo is part of the new package that the Comune of Lucca is putting together that aims to attract a different type of tourism from the simple (and probably in the final reckoning- destructive) mass tourism and instead is looking for culture as the guiding principle to bring people to this area.
So just what has an exhibition in Lucca got to do with Barga? Actually quite a lot. Readers with a good memory might remember an exhibition in Barga in July 2009 called “Il san Cristoforo barghigiano e altre opere” by the sculptor Bruto Pomodoro …. the very same Bruto Pomodoro who is the Artistic Director of the newly formed association San Cristoforo in Lucca. in 2009 at the press conference in Palazzo Pancrazi he spoke at length and very eloquently ( article here) about the possibility of setting up a group of artists exhibiting and/or working here in Barga much like the artistic community on the other side of the mountains in Pietrasanta.
The coordinator of the Barga exhibition in 2009 (and President of the association San Cristoforo in Lucca) was Arturo Nardini. Also taking a leading role in both events was Prof. Stefano Borsi. At the time it looked as though there was going to be a real possibility that the cultural life in Barga was going to take an important step forward but unfortunately, by the looks of things that is not going to happened just yet.
It would appear that Barga has missed the boat and the possibility as passed us by. Lucca has grasped this opportunity with both hands and judging by the Guarienti exhibition, the association San Cristoforo are showing everybody in the province just how it should be done. Hats off to them as the exhibition really is something special and not to be missed.
Una mostra davvero ben ideata e ottimamente presentata ha aperto al pubblico questa settimana a Lucca, organizzata dall’Associazione San Cristoforo. In esposizione i lavori di Carlo Guarienti, sia in due che a tre dimensioni, tutti quanti dedicati allo scrittore Dino Buzzati. Pannelli di grandi dimensioni ricordano la tecnica dell’affresco, ma sono arricchiti da un mix di stili ed influenze che vanno dallo stile di Leonardo da Vinci a quello di de Chirico richiamando anche Cezanne e Picasso, anche con bronzi e sculture.
Lo spazio espositivo che ospita la mostra è la sconsacrata e meravigliosa chiesa di S. Cristoforo proprio nel centro di Lucca: la luce naturale entra dal bellissimo rosone centrale valorizzando le iscrizioni cesellate sul marmo e facendo sembrare le opere di Guarienti come se fossero state realizzate appositamente per questi spazi. I lavori in mostra si integrano perfettamente per tono, per colore, dimensione e tranquillità… ma ad un certo punto accade qualcosa di strano, la luce piano piano cambia e non è più la stessa. Quello che era in ombra adesso è gradualmente illuminato, e mentre il visitatore se ne rende conto, di nuovo cambia ancora e lo sfondo torna ad essere enfatizzato. Sembra che il tempo acceleri e rallenti mentre la luce del sole accarezza lo spazio, ma è talmente delicato e così ben architettato che ci vuole un po’ per rendersi conto che non si tratta di luce naturale ma di un sistema di illuminazione sofisticatissimo installato sul soffitto dello spazio espositivo, programmato per cambiare a tempo.
Come ha sottolineato il sindaco di Lucca durante il suo discorso di inaugurazione, l’associazione San Cristoforo fa parte del progetto che il comune di Lucca sta realizzando per attrarre un tipo diverso di turismo, diverso dal semplice (e forse, alla fine, “dannoso”) turismo di massa, puntando piuttosto sulla cultura come stimolo per far arrivare i visitatori in questa zona.
Ma cosa ha a che fare una mostra allestita a Lucca con Barga? I lettori di buona memoria ricorderanno l’esposizione tenutasi a Barga nel luglio 2009 intitolata “Il san Cristoforo barghigiano e altre opere” realizzata dallo scultore Bruto Pomodoro. Lo stesso Bruto Pomodoro che è direttore artistico di questa neonata associazione San Cristoforo. Nel 2009, durante la conferenza stampa tenuta a Palazzo Pancrazi, Pomodoro parlò della possibilità di creare un gruppo di artisti che esponessero o addirittura lavorassero a Barga creando una comunità, proprio come accade dall’altra parte delle Apuane a Pietrasanta. Il coordinatore dell’esposizione barghigiana (anche presidente dell’associazione San Cristoforo) fu Arturo Nardini, e un ruolo di spicco in entrambi gli eventi lo ha avuto il professor Stefano Borsi. Al momento sembrò che ci fossero possibilità reali perché ci fosse un passo avanti nella vita culturale della nostra cittadina, ma purtroppo, vedendo come sono andate le cose, pare che ancora non ci sarà.
Sembra che Barga abbia perso il treno e che la possibilità ci sia sfuggita. Lucca ha afferrato questa opportunità con entrambe le mani, e, a giudicare dalla mostra di Guarienti, l’associazione San Cristoforo sta dimostrando a tutta la Toscana come si fanno le cose. Tanto di cappello dunque ai membri dell’associazione dato che la mostra è qualcosa di speciale da non perdere assolutamente.
