High-Rised Potatoes

I wanted to plant a few potatoes in the raised bed vegetable patch but unfortunately the amount of lateral space available wouldn’t yield enough potatoes to fill a chip butty.

So, why not think vertically and grow them upwards I thought. A few clicks on the net and bingo, tyre-raised potatoes. Basically you place a tyre on the ground, plant a few potatoes in it, cover and then stack another 3 to 4 tyres on top.

Here is the theory

• Get 4 old used tyres.
• Paint bright colours (Optional)
• Choose a sunny spot and place a piece of cardboard down.
• Place one tyre on top of the cardboard and fill it with soil and compost.
• Place 3 or 4 seed potatoes on the soil.
• Place tyre 2 on top of tyre 1 and almost fill with soil
• Water well and then cover with a layer of mulch to keep the soil moist.
• Wait until the potato shoots are 20cm above the soil of tyre 2.
• Place tyre 3 on top of tyre 2
• Add more soil and compost to tyre 3, and remember don’t bury the whole shoot.
• Wait until the potato shoots are 20cm above the soil of tyre 3.
• Place tyre 4 on top of tyre 3
• Add more soil and compost to tyre 4.
• After a few months the flower will start to yellow.
• Stop watering them and wait till the plants are quite yellow.
• Harvest your potatoes by taking off the tyres one by one.
• Note: In theory you can harvest your whole crop at once or just as needed saving valuable cupboard space.

L’Orto recently had problems keeping out animals: Looks like we have problems with animals coming down during the night and feeding off the freshly planted potatoes once again. Even though the electric fence has been set up and is working just fine

No need for an electric fence with the tyre method, the toxins in the tyres are guaranteed to kill any animal before it eats half way through it.

A Short Potato story
I was raised in an old tyre,
Had lots of brothers and sisters,
We just hung around and never went out,
One day a big hand grabbed me,
My brothers were boiled and mashed,
My sisters were chopped and deep fried,
I was cut in two and put back in the tyre,
Now I am worried about my sons and daughters.

Volevo piantare un po’ di patate nelle mie aiuole rialzate, ma purtroppo lo spazio disponibile non avrebbe permesso di farne crescere neanche una singola porzione.
E allora perché non pensare in verticale e valutare l’idea di farle crescere all’insù?
Una breve ricerca su internet e… voilà, ecco l’idea: patate cresciute nei copertoni.
Praticamente basta piazzare un copertone per terra, seminare qualche patata, poi costruire altri 3 o 4 strati…

Ecco come fare:

• Procuratevi 4 vecchi copertoni e dipingeteli con colori brillanti (quest’ultimo passaggio è facoltativo)
• Cercate un luogo soleggiato e sistemateci un pezzo di cartone, poi adagiatevi sopra il primo copertone e riempitelo con terra e compost.
• Mettete 3 o 4 patate da seme nella terra e sistemateci sopra il secondo copertone.
• Aggiungete terra, annacquate bene e pacciamate per nutrire il terreno.
• Aspettate che i butti spuntino di almeno 20 cm dal secondo copertone e aggiungete un terzo copertone.
• Mettete ancora terra e compost e ricordate di non interrare completamente i germogli delle piante sotto.
• Aspettate che le patate nel terzo copertone germoglino e poi aggiungete il quarto copertone, di nuovo riempiendolo con terra e compost.
• Dopo qualche mese i fiori cominceranno a sbiadire: smettete quindi di innaffiare e aspettate che le piante si ingialliscano.

Adesso potete raccogliere le vostre patate togliendo un copertone alla volta.

Nota: le patate così coltivate si possono raccogliere tutte quante insieme, o, se avete poco spazio in cucina, un po’ per volta quando ce n’è bisogno.

L’orto di barganews ultimamente ha avuto (di nuovo) problemi nel tenere alla larga gli animali: durante la notte hanno fatto incetta delle patate appena seminate, anche se la recinzione elettrica era in funzione.
Con la tecnica del copertone non c’è bisogno di nessuna recinzione, le tossine contenute nella gomma uccidono qualunque animale prima ancora che provi razziare il raccolto.
