Over the past weekend a new topic of conversation has broken out in the city regarding an image which appeared on the wall of the Project Giovanni on the main road going up from Barga Giardini to Barga Vecchia.
It mysteriously arrived on the wall facing the road just as the country was entering the last stages of a referendum, which included, amongst other subjects, a vote on nuclear power in Italy.
The image does not out rightly take a position on the nuclear subject, being content with just apparently visually asking a question but it did appear the day before the referendum when all media are not allowed to comment or report on the upcoming vote – the perpetrators thereby neatly sidestepping that particular problem.
And there is the crux of the problem – should they labelled perpetrators or hailed as artists ?
The owner of the wall is in doubt (he can be heard in the interview below) according to him they are uncivilised and if they feel the need to display their “art” then it should be on their own walls and not the recently decorated wall of a private individual.

Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun) is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is any type of public markings that may appear in the forms of simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.
In modern times, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner’s consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime. Sometimes graffiti expresses social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions; to others it is merely vandalism. Graffiti has evolved into a pop culture existence often related to underground hip hop music, b-boying, and a lifestyle that remains hidden from the general public. Graffiti can be used as a gang signal to mark territory or to serve as an indicator or “tag” for gang-related activity.

The modern day graffiti artist can be found with an arsenal of various materials that allow for a successful production of a piece. This includes such techniques as scribing. However, spray paint in aerosol cans is the number one necessity for graffiti. From this commodity come different styles, technique, and abilities to form master works of visual graffiti. Spray paint can be found at hardware and art stores and come in virtually every color.
Stencil graffiti, originating in the early 1980s, is created by cutting out shapes and designs in a stiff material (such as cardboard) to form an overall design or image. The stencil is then placed on the wall and with quick, easy strokes of the aerosol can, the image begins to appear on the intended surface. This method of graffiti is popular amongst artists because of its swift technique that requires very little time. Time is always a factor with graffiti due to the constant threat of getting caught by law enforcement.
Paper graffiti, also known as flyposting or wheatpasting is the latest form of graffiti where the work is done first on paper and the finished design then pasted up on the wall. This allows much more time for the artist to prepare their design and a far shorter time to get their work up in place. This also means that the work can be removed with just the application of some water and the wall returned to its original condition and without the need for costly repainting.

Each cell has a double barred window and double wooden doors reinforced in iron with large bolts. At least two prisoners could be kept in each cell. The prison was also used in the early 1920′s and it is from that period that most of the prisoners scribbles and drawings inside the cells date. Two of the cells were reserved for female prisoners who had to be kept separate from the men.
Recent restoration work inside the prison has revealed another layer of graffiti from a much earlier period. The flaking plaster has been carefully removed in places to finally bring back to the light images with a religious content … images of The Madonna and St. Christopher, the Patron Saint of Barga . Experts are still working on trying to pinpoint a precise date for when the prisoners used the walls as their canvas and diary.
Durante lo scorso fine settimana parecchie conversazioni dei barghigiani si sono concentrate su un disegno che è apparso sulla facciata esterna dell’Informagiovani, in Via Pascoli.
L’immagine è arrivata misteriosamente proprio mentre in tutta Italia si stavano svolgendo i referendum popolari, tra i quali, come sapete, era compreso un quesito sull’energia nucleare.
Il soggetto in questione non prende una posizione precisa in merito alla faccenda del nucleare limitandosi, almeno apparentemente, a far riflettere, ma il fatto che sia stato fatto proprio nei giorni di silenzio elettorale, quando cioè i media non possono pubblicare notizie relative alle operazioni di voto, fa pensare che l’autore abbia brillantemente eluso il problema.
E qui sta il nocciolo della faccenda: l’autore sarà etichettato come colpevole o acclamato come artista?
Il proprietario del muro (la sua intervista è riportata più sotto) è dubbioso: a sentir lui chi ha fatto il disegno è un incivile, e soprattutto – dice – se qualcuno sente la necessità di esprimere la propria “arte”, dovrebbe farlo sui muri di casa propria e non su quello appena ridipinto di qualcun altro.
Altri hanno un’idea diversa, e come è possibile notare con una rapida ricerca in rete, in molti posti i “graffitisti” sono apprezzatissimi.
Le polemiche che circondano questo genere di espressione creano spesso contrapposizioni tra amministratori e forze dell’ordine in perenne lotta con i graffitisti che vogliono invece continuare a manifestare il loro lavoro in luoghi pubblici.
Ci sono diversi tipi e stili di graffiti ed è una forma d’arte in rapida evoluzione, il cui valore, però, è spesso contestato e screditato – in diverse nazioni disegnare su proprietà senza l’autorizzazione del proprietario è considerato come un atto di vandalismo e punito dalla legge – oppure protetto e valorizzato.
I Graffiti (singolare: graffito, il plurale è usato come nome collettivo) sono immagini o scritte graffiate, scarabocchiare, dipinte o comunque tracciate in diversi modi e con diversi mezzi e rientra in questa definizione qualsiasi segno che va dalla semplice scritta al più elaborato dipinto su muro. I graffiti esistono da tempi remoti, con esempi arrivati a noi fin dalla Grecia antica o dall’impero romano.
In tempi recenti la vernice, soprattutto spray, e i pennarelli indelebili sono diventati gli strumenti più comunemente usati per questo genere di lavori; certe volte i graffiti esprimono messaggi sociali o politici, e c’è un intero genere artistico che si basa sull’uso di vernici spray con questo stile.
I graffiti si sono sviluppati dalla cultura pop, spesso collegata alla musica hip hop underground e b-boying, e spesso sono usati dalle gang per segnare il proprio territorio oppure sono utilizzati come “logo” (tag) per rivendicare una qualche azione.
I graffitisti moderni hanno a disposizione un vasto arsenale di materiali che permettono loro una buona riuscita del lavoro. Le bombolette spray sono sicuramente lo strumento privilegiato per realizzare graffiti, e da questo strumento derivano diversi stili, tecniche e abilità nel creare capolavori.
Una tecnica ormai sempre più utilizzata è quella dello stencil, nata negli anni ’80: si realizzano delle mascherine ritagliando materiale rigido per creare un immagine di massima; dopodiché lo stencil viene piazzato sul muro e con passaggi veloci della bomboletta l’immagine appare sulla superficie.
Questo metodo si è diffuso soprattutto perché è una tecnica immediata che richiede pochissimi secondi per realizzare il lavoro. Il tempo è infatti un fattore importante per i graffitisti, dato che incombe sempre la minaccia di essere acciuffati.
I graffiti realizzati con la carta – è il caso del misterioso disegno apparso a Barga – chiamati anche flyposting (affissioni illegali) o wheatpasting (colla d’amido) sono una variante moderna del graffito, secondo la quale il lavoro è prima realizzato su carta e poi incollato sul muro.
Questo dà agli artisti più tempo per preparare il disegno ma rapidità per sistemarlo nel posto scelto ed un altro vantaggio del flyposting è che il lavoro può essere rimosso facilmente ed il muro può tornare pulito in poco tempo e senza operazioni costose.
I graffiti apparsi a Barga negli ultimi 10 anni mostrano il graduale arrivo dello stencil con un primo esempio sul muro esterno dello stadio nel 2007; un’altra versione più recente è invece impressa sulla parete dei bagni pubblici.
E non dimentichiamoci che a Barga ci sono esempi di questo tipo ben più antichi nelle celle sotto al Museo Civico del territorio.
Le carceri di Barga furono usate fino alla fine degli anni ’20, e risalgono proprio a quel periodo gli scarabocchi e i disegni che ancora oggi si vedono sulle pareti.
I recenti restauri hanno rivelato un altro strato di dipinti risalenti a un periodo ancora più remoto: rimuovendo delicatamente l’intonaco sono state infatti riportate alla luce immagini religiose come la Madonna o San Cristoforo e gli esperti stanno cercando di datarle per capire da quando i prigionieri hanno cominciato ad utilizzare quei muri come tele o diari.
