Twelve months ago around about this time of the season, things looked and sounded very different for the Campanari – the bell ringers of Barga, as they were organising a series of meetings up in the bell tower of the Duomo with other local bell ringers from Cardoso, Chiozza, Ghivizzano, Corsagna, Palagnana, S. Marcello Pistoiese and Lucca.(article here)
This week they were once again back up in the Duomo but this time, things were very much quieter and could well remain quiet for some time to come as essential maintenance on the bells means that they cannot be rung until they can finally sort out a problem which has been plaguing the largest of the three bells in the belfry since at least January of last year.
Time is a relative thing when you consider that the Duomo is a thousand years old and the oldest of the bells dates back to the 16th century but it would appear that the last time the bearings were examined was over 30 years ago when the bells were spun around a few degrees on their wooden yoke so that the clapper would not damage the bell by hitting the same spot. It was decided that the bearings which hold the weight of the bell and allow it to swing backwards and forwards were in need of changing.
Once they had managed the difficult task of securing the bell, estimated at 16 quintale … (1 quintale =100 kilos … you do the math) and opened up the bearing case it was discovered that not only were they worn down but one had actually been destroyed by the forces exerted on it over the years. That bearing was changed (article here) in January 2010 but still ever since the bell had been getting progressively more difficult to swing and so another intervention was necessary.
This time the bell was winched down the floor so that a more thorough examination of the problem could be undertaken. The technicians are still uncertain as to just what is the problem and so for the moment – the bells of Barga are silenced – hopefully not for long.
