A year after his death, an exhibition in memory of Maurizio Suffredini (1953–2011), an artist born in Livorno but raised in Fornaci di Barga, opened on Sunday 22 April at 3 p.m.
Promoted and strongly supported by his son Simone, the exhibition featured around a dozen paintings of various sizes, tracing the creative development of a versatile artist who moved with ease between canvas painting and decorative wall art.
Equally eclectic in his choice of subjects, Maurizio depicted iconic classical-style nudes, still lifes and sacred images through a simple yet highly realistic technique that he developed during his studies at the Art Institute.
Known by many for his remarkable versatility, Suffredini worked throughout his life as a carpenter, coachbuilder, mechanic, electrician, plumber and restorer. He was also an accomplished rally driver. The painter’s soul that accompanied him throughout his life remains, perhaps, an unexpected discovery for those who had not previously known of his profound artistic sensitivity.
Among his youthful ambitions was an episode that many local people still remember. As a young boy, he attracted the attention of the Italian state broadcaster RAI after sending a letter asking whether Christmas presents could be provided for him and his sister, since their father, who had long been absent, was unable to fulfil his family responsibilities. The residents of Fornaci at the time would clearly remember the unexpected arrival of the RAI television crews.
The exhibition, organised jointly by the cultural association Venti d’Arte and the young members of Proshop Village ’77, also included projected images, background music and informational brochures celebrating the creative expression of Maurizio Suffredini.
The event also marked the beginning of a collaboration between the cultural association Venti d’Arte and the newly established Proshop Village ’77. Through an innovative partnership between culture and commerce, the two organisations aim to promote culture as a driving force for development and growth within the community.
