A surprise for any visitors to Barga this afternoon, upon entering Piazza Angelio in Barga Vecchia as they were greeted by a voice mixed choir.
The 21 members of the Canoryon Lowen choir from Cornwall in the UK put on a short informal concert in the Piazza.
The sound of their voices carried right through the city into the next piazza where the mayor of Barga, Marco Bonini was sitting in a meeting.
The meeting was adjourned as he went down into the piazza to meet the choir and their musical director Nick hart.
The man behind the choir coming to Barga was the musician, Paul Thomas who has been responsible for bringing another choir -- the St Martin’s Singers with the conductor Michael Hodges who sung in the city back in 2005 (article here) and again in May last year (article here)

All three events over the years have had the same informal feel to them with minimal publicity as the choir enjoyed singing in the city without the pressure of an actual performance.
The concert was the second in a series of events (the first was the presentation of the Scottish Beer just a week or so ago -- article here) that the ever resourceful Riccardo Negri at the L’Osteria will be offering to the Barga public right through the season.
Canoryon Lowen is a mixed choir of 30 singers, based in the village of St Neots, UK but with members drawn from both Devon and Cornwall.
Formed in 2002 under the musical directorship of Nick Hart, the choir performs music from a very wide repertoire, including classical, church music, rock ballads, spirituals and musicals -- from Tallis to Tavener, Beatles to Broadway, and everything in between.
Concerts have included complete works, such as Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’, and Orf’s ‘Carmina Burana’, which were performed to high acclaim. As well as local concerts the choir has undertaken two tours, singing in Prague, Venice and Cortina. Its most recent project has been the premiere of the specially commissioned A Daughter’s Tale with three sell-out performances to critical and popular acclaim.
Chi è passato per piazza Angelio questo pomeriggio si è imbattuto in una bella sorpresa: il coro Canoryon Lowen, una formazione di 21 professionisti provenienti dalla Cornovaglia (UK), che ha tenuto un concerto all’aperto sotto la direzione di Nick Hart.
In tanti si sono fermati ad ascoltare, compreso il sindaco Marco Bonini, arrivato in piazza Angelio dal vicino palazzo municipale.
Il merito di questa improvvisata è di Paul Thomas, che negli ultimi anni ha portato a Barga anche i St Martin’s Singer, la prima volta nel 2005 e poi di nuovo a maggio 2011.
Tutte e tre le esibizioni sono state informali e molto poco pubblicizzate, dato che i coristi preferiscono esibirsi senza la pressione che una vera platea può far provare.
L’evento è il secondo di una serie (il primo è stata la presentazione della Birra scozzese avvenuta qualche settimana fa) che il vulcanico Riccardo Negri del’Osteria di Piazza Angelio sta organizzando per movimentare la stagione.
Il Canoryon Lowen è un coro misto di 30 elementi che ha la sua base a St Neots, anche se alcuni cantanti provengono dal Devon e dalla Cornovaglia.
Formatosi nel 2002 sotto la direzione musicale di Nick Hart, il coro ha un vasto repertorio che spazia dai brani classici alla musica sacra passando per ballate rock e brani spiritual o tratti da musical.
I concertisti hanno al loro attivo anche opere complete, come The armed man di Karl Jenkins o i Carmina Burana di Carl Orf. Oltre a concerti in Inghilterra, il Canoryon Lowen ha effettuato tournee a Praga, Venezia e Cortina.
