Back in March we published a couple of articles about the monthly market here in Barga (they can be seen here)
We mentioned in those articles that in February the market seemed to have touched bottom with the worst attendance in probably 15 years but happily in the following month there was a huge surge of people once again coming into Barga Vecchia to see what was on sale. It looked as though the market was once more back up and running.
Today that view seems to have been confirmed as the city was once again filled with people visiting the market stalls in the narrow streets of Barga Vecchia.
There was also another change taking place in the make-up and structure of the market.
The original idea was for a market for crafts and artisans.
Over the years it gradually transformed itself into a kind of antiques market and then into just a market with more or less anything up for sale.
Today it seems to have gone full circle and we are once again seeing many stalls showing objects and goods made by hand.
The crafts market is alive and flourishing apparently.
Which kind of begs the question – is this a positive sign that the economy as a whole is picking up and money is once again circulating freely?
Or could it be, as one of two people pessimistically voiced this afternoon, yet another sign of the economic crisis as people are now making do and turning back to handmade objects in an attempt to raise money……

One thing for sure is that the quality of goods now on sale at the monthly market here in Barga Vecchia is far higher than it has ever been in the past and pulling in artists and artisans from a far wider area than just around Barga, all of which can only be interpreted as a positive sign for shoppers.
A marzo avevamo pubblicato un paio di articoli sul mercato mensile dell’artigianato a Barga. In quegli articoli riportavano che l’edizione del febbraio sembrava quella in cui si era toccato il fondo di questo appuntamento con la peggiore riuscita degli ultimi 15 anni probabilmente.
Fortunatamente, già dal mese successivo, si è registrato una inversione di tendenza con un notevole incremento anche di visitatori ritornati in Barga Vecchia per vedere che cosa si trovava in vendita.
Un segno tangibile, almeno apparente, che il mercatino di Barga fosse un evento ancora attivo ed in grado di attrarre gente.
Questa ipotesi sembra essere confermata dall’edizione di ieri, domenica 10 giugno. Barga è stata ancora una volta presa d’assalto dalla gente in giro per le carraie a far visita alle bancarelle.
Le due ultime edizioni hanno fatto registrare anche un positivo cambiamento nel make-up e nella struttura del mercato, nato come evento dedicato all’artigianato, ma che poi, nel corso degli anni, si era trasformato in una sorta di mercatino di merce più o meno banale e dozzinale in vendita.
Ora sembra di essere tornati al punto di partenza e sono tornate le bancarelle che mostrano l’opera di tanti artigiani, con articoli fatti a mano ed anche molto belli.
Insomma, il mercato dell’artigianato è vivo e vegeto a quanto pare.
Tutto questo ci fa venire in monte un interrogativo però. Il risveglio del mercatino è un segno positivo che l’economia nel suo complesso si stia risvegliando e che il denaro ricomincia a circolare oppure, come qualche persona pessimisticamente ha detto, è un nuovo segno della crisi? Del fatto che la gente torna a vendere o ad acquistare oggetti d’artigianato perché in cerca di occasioni per spendere meno?

Al di là della traduzione di questo scritto e della domanda che rilanciamo, vorremmo aggiungere, a margine, una nota negativa relativa all’accoglienza di certi cittadini di Barga per questo evento.
La foto che pubblichiamo insieme a questo articolo in italiano parla da sola. E’ stata scattata a fine mattinata, diverso tempo dopo dall’inizio della manifestazione. Il bello è che nemmeno una multa è stata fatta a questo cittadino che ha indubbiamente ostacolato (e lo fa spesso), una manifestazione pubblica in corso nel centro storico.
