For the second in our series of conversations with artists, this afternoon we spent an hour in the company of the Danish artist Tina Birch Chimenti who was preparing an exhibition of her work to be shown in the workshop of Swietlan Kraczyna
As you can hear in the conversation at the bottom of this article, Tina Birch Chimenti has brought to Barga some of her recent ceramics and work on paper and which has to be said is not exactly the easiest of themes for viewers to the exhibition as one of the central themes of her work is the continued practice in some African countries of female infibulationin, sometimes also known as “pharaonic circumcision”.
Female infibulation, known as Type III female genital mutilation (FGM)—and in some African countries as “pharaonic circumcision”—is the removal of the labia minora (inner lips) and labia majora (outer lips). When the labial tissue heals, it forms a wall of skin and flesh across the vagina and the rest of the pubic area. By inserting a twig or similar before the wound heals, a small hole is created for the passage of urine and menstrual blood. The procedure is usually accompanied by the removal of the clitoris. The legs are bound together for two to four weeks to allow the labia to heal into a barrier. The procedure is usually carried out on young girls before the onset of puberty. – source – Wikipedia

L’infibulazione (dal latino fibula, spilla) è una mutilazione genitale femminile. Consiste nell’asportazione della clitoride (escissione), delle piccole labbra, di parte delle grandi labbra vaginali con cauterizzazione, cui segue la cucitura della vulva, lasciando aperto solo un foro per permettere la fuoriuscita dell’urina e del sangue mestruale.
Ha origine esclusivamente culturale, e oggi è adottata e praticata soprattutto in molte società in Africa, nella penisola araba e nel sud-est asiatico.
Con la legge 9 gennaio 2006, n. 7, il Parlamento italiano ha provveduto a tutelare la donna dalle pratiche di mutilazione genitale femminile, in attuazione degli articoli 2, 3 e 32 della Costituzione e di quanto sancito dalla Dichiarazione e dal Programma di azione adottati a Pechino il 15 settembre 1995 nella quarta Conferenza mondiale delle Nazioni Unite sulle donne. Al codice penale è aggiunto l’articolo 583-bis che punisce con la reclusione da quattro a dodici anni chi, senza esigenze terapeutiche, cagiona una mutilazione degli organi genitali femminili. Per mutilazione il legislatore intende, oltre alla infibulazione, anche la clitoridectomia, l’escissione o comunque (norma di chiusura) qualsiasi pratica che cagioni effetti dello stesso tipo.
Allo stesso modo, chi, in assenza di esigenze terapeutiche, al fine di menomare le funzioni sessuali, provoca lesioni agli organi genitali femminili diverse da quelle indicate al primo comma, da cui derivi una malattia nel corpo o nella mente, è punito con la reclusione da tre a sette anni.
Le disposizioni di questo articolo si applicano altresì quando il fatto è commesso all’estero da cittadino italiano o da straniero residente in Italia, ovvero in danno di cittadino italiano o di straniero residente in Italia. In tal caso, il colpevole è punito a richiesta del Ministro della giustizia.

Conversations with Artists – Back in the early 80s there was a project over the whole of this area known as Project Echo which was aimed at providing links between the educational system, the home environment and culture in general.
In those years the guiding hand behind this project was the teacher Duse Lemmeti (now retired) and the then assesore of cultura for Castelnuovo, dott. Carlo Popiaz (now the principal of the IPSIA school in Castelnuovo – interview with dott. Popaiz can be heard here)
Unfortunately that project is long gone but one vital part which was first announced all those years ago at the age of new technology taken on a new life. The idea then was to build a “cultural map” of the area with a census of the artists working within the territory.
Long before the age of Internet this meant a good deal of letter writing, faxing and telephoning to build up a comprehensive list of working artists in this area.
All that has now changed as we move into the era of daily and constant contact.
Barga is known as art city not just historically but also because of the many exhibitions by contemporary artists during the year.
