There can be no doubt that Italy is deep in the throes of the world recession but this evening all that was forgotten as the residents of Barga celebrated the end of 2012 and the start of what will hopefully be a more financially secure 2013.
The restaurants in Barga Vecchia were all full to bursting as people sat down and enjoyed the traditional New Year’s Eve cena.
The weather was the best it has been for a New Year’s Eve for many a year with temperatures down to 2° but with no wind and stars overhead meaning that it was perfect conditions for the whole valley to be seen from the vantage point of the Duomo.
This year there were many people up at the cathedral as the bells struck midnight and the party started in earnest with fireworks and rockets shooting off right across the valley.
This year there was also what could be termed “a new entry” to the night sky to complement the fast moving pyrotechnics – the slow-moving Chinese lanterns which have gradually become popular over the last year or two.
There is still a good deal of polemic concerning their use but on an aesthetic front they certainly do add to the visual festivities.
Music was also the order of the day with jazz musicians in the jazz club playing for all they were worth, accordion music in Riccardo’s just outside the main gates and DJs doing their worst in both the Sciaccaguai and the L’osteria in Piazza Angelio.
The old year is finished, the new one just begun. Let’s hope this one will be a better one for all.

Non c’è alcun dubbio che l’Italia sia alle prese con una crisi a livello mondiale che lungo lo stivale ci sta dando particolarmente duro, ma almeno per una sera tutto il peggio che c’è è stato dimenticato ed anche gli abitanti di Barga hanno festeggiato la fine del 2012 e l’avvio del 2013 che tutti speriamo sia, almeno finanziariamente parlando, più rassicurante.
I ristoranti di Barga vecchia hanno registrato il tutto esaurito con tanta e tanta gente ai tavoli ad apprezzare il cenone di San Silvestro.
Il tempo ha regalato una serata freddina, con temperature attorno ai 2°, e l’assenza di vento ed un cielo stellato hanno offerto le condizioni ideali per ammirare i classici fuochi d’artificio di tutta la Valle dalla posizione particolarmente privilegiata del sagrato del Duomo.
Anche quest’anno sono salite fin lassù molte persone e al rintocco delle campane che hanno annunciato la mezzanotte la festa è cominciata con fuochi d’artificio e razzi sparati da tutti gli angoli della vallata.
Quest’anno in Duomo si è aggiunta poi una “new entry” tra le tante luci ed i fuochi che si sono stagliati fulminei nel cielo: le lente ed affascinanti lanterne cinesi che sono via, via diventate più popolari nel corso degli ultimi anni e che hanno fatto la loro comparsa, lanciate numerose, anche sopra il sagrato del Duomo, ieri sera.
Sul loro uso c’è ancora una certa polemica circa la loro pericolosità, ma indubbiamente dal punto di vista estetico il contributo alla suggestione delle lanterne cinesi è affascinante.
Oltre al cenone anche la musica è stata all’ordine del giorno del menù dei festeggiamenti di San Silvestro con i giochi musicali degli artisti del Barga Jazz Club che si sono ritrovati nel loro locale per una bella festa privata; alla Trattoria Da Riccardo appena fuori porta a tenere compagnia ci ha pensato la musica di una fisarmonica; all’Osteria ed allo Scacciaguai si è fatto musica e si è ballato con tanto di dj superprofessionali. Sono stati proprio piazza Angelio, grazie all’organizzazione di Riccardo dell’Osteria ed i locali dello Scacciaguai a richiamare tutti i festaioli della serata per un po’ di danze sfrenate
L’anno vecchio è finito, quello nuovo è appena iniziato. Speriamo che questo sarà uno migliore per tutti.
