The series of earthquakes which shook this area on the 25th January are still making their presence felt with many churches still closed in Garfagnana due to cracks in the walls and here in Barga where two large palazzo’s have been evacuated while builders and technicians check on possible damage.
The tremors are still arriving on a more or less daily basis but so far they are mainly only detectable by instruments and not picked up by most people in the street but there is still a good deal of anxiety and stress in the air with people constantly checking on social networks and smart phones for any news of the latest tremors.
In the middle of all the fuss of earthquakes and evacuations there was another related story which appeared on Facebook and other social media in this area and then which moved across to local newspapers and television and even involved Fedora Quattrocchi,, the researcher with the National Institute of Geophysics and volcanology who apparently arrived with a team to check if the story was true or not.
Tra le innumerevoli implicazioni del terremoto del 25 gennaio scorso e dello sciame sismico che lo ha seguito, ha avuto un certo spazio sulle cronache e tra le chiacchiere della gente il fenomeno dei “vulcanelli” di fango che sarebbero apparsi nei pressi del laghetto termale di Pra’ di Lama a Pieve Fosciana.
Nei giorni scorsi è stato scritto e commentato sui social network addirittura che la temperatura delle acque termali si fosse di molto innalzata, e che gli animali stessero fuggendo dalle rive del lago in seguito al sorgere di questi piccoli vulcani di fango che sbuffavano gas caldo. Il fatto ha interessato anche gli studiosi dell’INGV che, con la dottoressa Fedora Quattrocchi, è arrivato sul luogo per raccogliere campioni e studiare il fenomeno.

It was the story of the Vulcanelli -- miniature volcano’s formed by bubbling gas and mud which had apparently started appearing on the banks of the Pra ‘di Lama, in Pieve Fosciana in Garfagnana.
The Pra ‘di Lama is a small lake which is fed by a thermal source with warm water coming out of the pipe in the nearby car park.
Images of these miniature volcano’s on facebook and stories of the temperature in the lake rising dramatically turned the usually semi-deserted area in Pieve Fosciana into an overnight tourist spot.
The problem was, it was all completely false.
Yes, there is a thermal spring.
Yes, the water is warm but no, the temperature was not rising and absolutely no vulcanelli where to be found anywhere in the area.
In fact, the vulcanelli did exist but not in Garfagnana, or even in northern Italy for that matter -- the image of the vulcanelli that was being touted around as Garfagnana and a product of the recent earthquake was in fact from the nature reserve “Macalube di Aragona” in the provincia of Agrigento in Scily over 1500 kms to the south
Ebbene, l’intera storia dei vulcanelli era falsa, un fake, mutuato da un fenomeno che accade realmente ma distanza di oltre 1500 chilometri, nella riserva naturale integrale di Macalube di Aragona in provincia di Agrigento. Nessun vulcanello è stato infatti trovato durante i sopralluoghi degli scienziati.
Insomma, sappiamo che il laghetto Pra’ di Lama ogni tanto fa qualche scherzetto, ma pare che per questa volta sia stato ben tranquillo a farsi studiare senza mostrare anomalie.
“Macalube di Aragona”
Nella Riserva Naturale Integrale “Macalube di Aragona” in provincia di Agrigento la formazione di “salse” è frequente. Da queste il metano ( CH4 ) di origine organogena sedimentaria si libera nell’atmosfera portando in superficie poca acqua salmastra ( acqua salina fossilifera) e povera di fango (argilla + acqua).- source here
“Vulcanelli” a Pieve Fosciana forse spie di future scosse -- LUCCA 3 febbraio 2013 -- Sulle rive del laghetto di Pra’ di Lama, a Pieve Fosciana in Garfagnana, sono spuntati «vulcanelli di fango» da cui fuoriesce un gas. La segnalazione è arrivata venerdì pomeriggio alla sala operativa dell’Istituto nazionale di geofisica ed è stata immediatamente girata alla ricercatrice Fedora Quattrocchi, responsabile dell’unità funzionale geochimica dei fluidi, stoccaggio geologico e geotermia della sezione sismologia e tettonofisica, dell’Istituto nazionale di geofisica e vulcanologia. L’esperta sarà in Garfagnana da domani e per quattro giorni per misurare tutta una serie di parametri legati allo sciame sismico tuttora in corso dal 25 gennaio. Indagini soprattutto sulle acque termali della zona. «Valori di temperatura, Ph dell’acqua, salinità, presenza del gas radon, livello piezometrico dei pozzi ecc. rappresentano valori che insieme all’osservazione del comportamento degli animali possono contribuire a capire il rischio sismico e forse, un giorno, arrivare a determinare con precisione dove e quando colpirà un forte terremoto». -- source La Nazione
Just when you thought the mystery had all been cleared up and the person or persons unknown who had put up those images on the net had had their last laugh -- what should arrive on my desk ? Images of gas bubbling up through the mud at Pra ‘di Lama, another of the bank collapsed as the water level rose and even stories of chickens in a nearby farm getting their feet scalded by the hot mud.
Those images are from 30 years ago, the farm is now long derelict and few people are around to corroborate the story but thanks to Tiziano Bertoli for sending them in.
When all’s said and done, strange place the Pra ‘di Lama, don’t you think ?
