Last week we published a short article (here) about the sound of the spring in Barga with the arrival of the swallows.
Now there is another sound in the air coming from the green area between Barga Vecchia and Barga Giardino , the Parco Kennedy.
The sound is so loud that local residents close to the park have sometimes had to shut their windows to keep the noise at bay and believe it or not it is all coming from some very small creatures.
Tiny bright green frogs living in the fountain are making themselves heard as part of their mating season.
That season last a couple of months and they have only started “singing” in the last week so the residents around the park could still have a few more weeks of the chorus to put up with.
Have a listen to the audioboo at the end of this article and decide for yourself if the sound of the frogs is pleasurable or not.

Sexual differences
Males have nuptial pads on their hands which are greyish in colour. Males can be very green or even yellow during the breeding season being rarely brown. Males have a pair of external vocal sacs. Females are larger then the males but have slimmer limbs.
History and origin
The Italian pool frog was first described by Günther in 1986, the scientific name of this species is Pelophylax bergeri. Pelophylax is from Greek and is composed of two words, the first is ‘mud’ and the second is ‘guardian’ name given because these frogs never move far away from the water and they often stay immobile on the waters edge as if they were guarding the mud. Bergeri because Günther dedicated this species to Berger, Polish herpetologist (the herpetologist that discovered that Pelophylax kl. esculentus was a natural hybrid of Pelophylax ridibundus and Pelophylax lessonae).
Reproduction
The breeding season can last up to 1 to 2 months (starts in March). Reproduction sites are still water holes, in ponds, lakes or in swamps… Males are seen sitting on an algae rock singing at each other as if they are running a singing competition. When a female comes within eye distance of our singing males, the singing stops and the most impatient males immediately swim over to her, they then take the female to an area in the water with many plants, sticks and in general a lot of vegetation. Then there is another competition between the males, but this time there’s a judge, the female. They sing at each other an the one who has the most piercing sound should normally win the females wishes to breed. the winning male will climb onto the females back and hold her behind her front legs, the male wraps his arms around her and sometimes the males thumbs will come into contact. The female will then eject a small clutch of eggs which the male fertilizes on their way out of the female. After a short pause, the same happens again. If they are disturbed they will dive and separate, often swimming in the opposite direction, if the female comes to the surface and can’t see the male she was just with, she will take another male and this procedure will reproduce until the female is empty. – source
Following on from this article there was a comment posted complaining about other noises in the area. Specifically the noise left by each passing car as it ran over a loose manhole cover on the bridge. The comment asked if maybe it would be possible to record that noise so that other people could be aware of the problem as well.
Non so se è una forzatura giornalistica il fatto che i cittadini ab biano dovuto chiedere le finestre per non sentire il gracidare delle rane, anche perchè per me che abito lì, non mi sembra che diano noia, anzi fanno allegria, nel grigiore di Barga deserta. Semmai da più noia, mollta di più, il rimore che fa la botola del GAS situata nel lato opposto a Barbiere, dove ogni vettura che ci passa sopra provoca un rumore fastidioso che si potrebbe evitare inserendo ai lati della botola della gomma per ridurre e/o eliminare il rumore.
Prego Keane di documentare anche questo “rumore”. Sempre dovuto al “menefreghismo” che impera, questo è quello che penso e che dico, perchè mi sembra impossibile che nessuno di quelli del “Comune” si sia accorto di niente.

Vorrei solo far notare che in quella vasca, al centro dello zampillo, fino a doversi anni fa faceva bella mostra di sé un artistico lavoro di Vincenzo Gonnella, che eseguì al tempo che fu realizzato e inaugurato il parco, realizzato dalla Pro-Loco e Comune, con tanto di servizio sulla rete principale della TV nazionale.
Salvo errori temporali credo fosse il 1969.
Avendo fatto ricerca di notizie su quel lavoro artistico sono venuto a sapere da un impiegato del Comune che giace in qualche loro magazzino.
Non sarebbe il caso di rimetterlo in opera?

hai perfettamente ragione Pier Giuliano – riportiamo la fontana al suo splendore originale – la fontana era uno dei simboli di Barga che veniva riportata spesso nelle cartoline ! Ora fa solo tristezza !

Grazie Keane, ho controllato e la tua registrazione rende bene il rumore noiosissimo della botola.
Ora c’è solo da sperare che quelli del “Comune” provvedano ad eliminarlo. O dede essere la “Provincia” o addirittura l’Azienda del Gas? Speriamo che non sia il solito “SCARICABARILE” su chi deve intervenire.

Da quello che non riesco più a sentire, sembra che il presunto “noisy frog in Parco Kennedy” non esista più.
Che qualcuno si sia accorto che i ranocchi sono commestibili e prelibati e abbia colto l’occasione per una bella “frittura” liberando così dal rumoroso (noisy) gracidare dei ranocchi i cittadini “costretti a chiudere le finestre per il fracasso che i ranocchi provocavano, e quindi facendosi una bella magiata di questa carne bianca molto prelibata e quindi anche ricercata dai buongustai?
Lascio l’onere della risposta a chi ha sollevato il problema.

Da notare solo l’assonanza tra la parola ingese “noisy” cioè rumoroso,e la parola italiana “noioso” che vuol dire tutt’altra cosa.
Questa mescolanza di scritti in inglese e in italiano crea senz’altro una mescolanza che può indurre ad una
cattiva interpetazione di quanto viene scritto.
Anche se poi, ripensandoci,tra “rumoroso” e “noioso” nella lingua italiana possono sembrare quasi sinonimi.

Hanno ripulito un po’ alla meglio la Vasca con fontana di Sotto il Ponte. Se non altro, almeno per ora (oggi) spruzza. Ma una curiosità mi rode: che fine hanno fatto le rane e/o ranocchi che gracidavano nella stessa fino a qualche giorno fa? E’ dato da sapere? Chi ci può dare le notizie su questa “sparizione”? Che sia stata la fama conquistata da queste bestiole per essere assunte alla gloria della cronaca giornalistica locale, a far fare loro una fine ingloriosa ma magari appetitosa?
