Just a few months ago the area was crammed packed with hundreds of people enjoying the groups and bands playing just below the church as part of the ten day Live in Barga Festa
Events that happened during the Second World War are still making themselves felt even today as this week technicians from the comune were called and after inspecting the piazza have now roped off a large area as it is in danger of imminent collapse.
A good part of the piazza was in fact a house which was then destroyed during the Second World War.
Below the piazza there is still the ground floor or the cantina of that house which has been used as a limonaia – a place to conserve lemon trees during the winter months for many years.
As can be plainly seen from the images the large steel beam which supports the ceiling and therefore supports the piazza above is almost totally corroded.
Work has already started on shoring up the ceiling that it could be sometime before the piazza is actually usable again.

Solo pochi mesi fa questa zona era gremita di centinaia di persone che si godevano i gruppi e le band che suonavano appena sotto la chiesa nell’ambito dei dieci giorni della festa Live in Barga.
Eventi accaduti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale continuano a farsi sentire ancora oggi. Questa settimana i tecnici del comune sono stati chiamati sul posto e, dopo aver ispezionato la piazza, hanno delimitato con delle corde una vasta area perché esiste il pericolo di un cedimento imminente.
Una buona parte della piazza era infatti in origine una casa, distrutta poi durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Sotto la piazza si trova ancora il piano terra, o la cantina, di quell’abitazione, che per molti anni è stata utilizzata come limonaia, un luogo dove conservare gli alberi di limone durante i mesi invernali.
Come si può chiaramente vedere dalle immagini, la grande trave d’acciaio che sostiene il soffitto — e quindi la piazza soprastante — è ormai quasi completamente corrosa.
I lavori per puntellare il soffitto sono già iniziati, ma potrebbe volerci ancora del tempo prima che la piazza possa essere nuovamente utilizzata.
