Generally when somebody dies in this area, people know within hours as posters are put up around the city informing people of their death and the date, time and place of their funeral but one recent death “flew under the radar” so to speak and passed off without the general public really being aware.
After checking with family members to make sure that their privacy was not being invaded, we now publish a letter written by a group of friends of Bruna Cordati Martinelli who died at the beginning of this month and a short video of her recorded last year where although already physically frail her acute mental capacity is immediately apparent as she recites some poetry from Giovanni Pascoli from memory.
Bruna, literary critic and author was the daughter of the painter Bruno Cordati and lived until the last couple of days of her life in the Palazzo Cordati in Barga Vecchia, in amongst her father’s collection of paintings and art gallery.

Le amiche del gruppo di lettura formato dalla professoressa e critica letteraria Bruna Cordati Martinelli esprimono gratitudine per il privilegio di esserle state vicino negli ultimi anni della sua vita.
Infatti Bruna le ha accolte nella sua casa di Barga con ospitalità, guidandole con affettuosa sollecitudine, con profondo acume cognitivo e con arguto senso di umorismo, al di là di ogni pedanteria, alla riscoperta di autori classici antichi e moderni.
I libri non erano il solo scopo dello stare insieme, era un “fare” per se stesse, un’apertura dell’una verso l’altra nel cercare il senso di capire e di essere capite in un’atmosfera diretta e serena voluta da lei; superando la minuta vita quotidiana.
Per le qualità eccezionali, culturali e umane di questa donna e educatrice straordinaria la ricordano con immenso rimpianto; ma sono anche gioiosamente consapevoli di avere ricevuto da lei il dono vivificante di un rinnovato slancio di vita e di autentica amicizia.
