A monument to the wind

In March of this year, many inhabitants of Barga spent a sleepless night as winds, according to the local protezione civile gusting up to 150-170 km/h,  ripped through the area.

As can be seen in some of the images published that morning (article here) many houses had their roofs damaged and as it became clearer as they day went on, many thousands of trees were uprooted and thrown to the ground as the wind from the North channeled through gullies and narrow valleys increasing its destructive power.

This week three artists from Barga started work on a monument to that wind and its relationship with the trees and using as their medium  a centuries old chestnut tree which had been brought to its knees on that eventful evening.

Luigi Paolini, Marco Poma and Mario Riccardi have started carving the tree with an accusing finger pointing directly at the North star.

This is work in progress, we will be publishing more images as the work progresses.
