There was a plume of black acrid smoke over Barga this afternoon as down at San Pietro in Campo just below Barga , one of the industrial units caught fire.
Three fire engines attended the blaze at the Metalfilms factory which was brought under control very quickly.
The main factory building was not touched by the blaze but a series of outbuilding and their contents were destroyed.
As you can hear in the short interview (in Italiano) with the Mayor of Barga, Marco Bonini, the comune issued a warning to residents living down wind from area to close their windows because of the risk of possible toxic fumes from the burning plastic.
People with vegetable gardens are also being warned about the possible danger but very few gardens are actually producing vegetables yet as we are early in the season so there should not be too many problems there.
