Finally into the open comes the story of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and their participation during September 1944 to May 1945 on the Gothic Line around Barga.
A new museum opened in Barga Vecchia this weekend which aims to throw more light on just what took place during those last months towards the end of the second world war.
The Brazilian Expeditionary Force or BEF – Força Expedicionária Brasileira consisted of about 25,700 men and women arranged by the army and air force to fight alongside the Allied forces in the Mediterranean Theatre of World War II. This air–land force consisted of (replacements included): a complete Infantry Division, a Liaison flight, and a Fighter squadron.
It fought in Italy from September 1944 to May 1945, while the Brazilian Navy as well as the Air Force also acted in the Battle of the Atlantic from the middle of 1942 until the end of the war. During almost eight months of its campaign, fighting at Gothic Line and in the 1945 final offensive, the BEF managed to take 20,573 Axis prisoners, consisting of two generals, 892 officers, and 19,679 other ranks. Brazil was the only independent South American country to send ground troops to fight overseas, losing 948 men killed in action across all three services during the Second World War.
The first missions the Brazilians undertook in close connection with the US 370th RCT, were reconnaissance operations to the end of August. Brazilian troops helped to partially fill the gap left by divisions of the US VI Corps and French Expeditionary Corps that left Italy for Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France. On September 16, the 6th RCT took Massarosa. Two days later it also took Camaiore and other small towns on the way north. By then, the BEF had already conquered Monte Prano, and taken control of the Serchio valley without any major casualties. After having suffered its first reverses around Barga city, and after the arrival of the 1st RCT at the end of October, the BEF was directed to the base of the Northern Apennines, on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions, where it would spend the next months facing the harsh winter and the resistance of the Gothic Line. Allied forces were unable to break through the mountains over the winter and an offensive by German and Italian divisions to the left of the BEF sector, against the US 92nd Infantry Division, required the assistance of the 8th Indian Infantry Division before it was repelled.
Due to the Brazilian dictatorship’s unwillingness to get more deeply involved in the Allied war effort, by early 1943 a popular saying was: “It’s more likely for a snake to smoke a pipe, than for the BEF to go the front and fight.” (“Mais fácil uma cobra fumar um cachimbo, do que a FEB embarcar para o combate.”).Before the BEF entered combat, the expression “a cobra vai fumar” (“the snake will smoke”) was often used in Brazil in a context similar to “when pigs fly”. As a result, the soldiers of the BEF called themselves Cobras Fumantes (literally, Smoking Snakes) and wore a divisional shoulder patch that showed a snake smoking a pipe. It was also common for Brazilian soldiers to write on their mortars, “The Snake is smoking …” (“A cobra está fumando…”) After the war the meaning was reversed, signifying that something will definitively happen and in a furious and aggressive way. With that second meaning the use of the expression “a cobra vai fumar” has been retained in Brazilian Portuguese until the present, although few of the younger generations realize the origin of the expression.
La “Casa Brasile in Toscana”
Il team di produzione del video-documentario storico “Brasile, l’Alleato dimenticato” ha deciso di continuare lo sviluppo di questo progetto, qui tra le montagne delle Appennino in Italia, dove si sono svolti i fati e le bataglie dai soldati Brasiliani nella Linea Gotica riportati su di esso.
Abbiamo creato un piccolo centro di produzione per ospitare le riunioni del team, le attrezzature per le riprese, gli oggetti di scena, i costumi e lo studio degli scenari e gli effetti speciali, per il tempo della durata della produzione.
Barga Ë stata scelta come la citt‡† ideale per la sua posizione e la sua importanza nella storia dei “pracinhas” brasiliani. Il locale Ë una caratteristica vecchia cantina, in riferimento alle migliaia di cantine in queste montagne dove si ospitavano i soldati di tutte le nazionalit‡† che qui hanno lottato. Abbiamo deciso di lasciare esposti ai visitatori alcuni degli oggetti di scena che useremo nella produzione, allestendo un piccolo angolo a tema in fondo alla cantina. Qui mostreremo come erano questi alloggi temporanei di montagna, dove trovarono riparo contro il terribile inverno del 1944/45, e dove alcuni di questi soldati facevano il loro lavoro quotidiano nelle cucine di campagna, nei magazzini di materiale bellico e anche dove i comandanti e i loro subordinati con le piccole stazioni radio, comunicavano tra il PC (posto di comando) nella retroguardia e i soldati in trincea, che ora cerchiamo di riprodurre in questo nostro iconico piccolo museo.
L’idea si Ë ampliata e ci siamo posti come obiettivo complementare trasformare questo luogo in un centro permanente di sviluppo e conservazione della cultura brasiliana in Italia ed i legami storici tra i due popoli. Vogliamo inoltre approfittare dell’esistenza di questo nucleo di produzione per far conoscere la ricca cultura brasiliana con la sua musica, la sua arte, la sua cucina, la sua letteratura alla quale il pubblico italiano e il gran numero di turisti che visitano Barga potrebbe essere interessato.
Per questo siamo nel processo di formazione di una Associazione Culturale denominata “Casa Brasile in Toscana” per ospitare non solo i progetti menzionati, ma anche per fornire assistenza ai turisti brasiliani che vengono in questa regione alla ricerca di informazioni storico-culturali, soprattutto quelle relative a questo importante evento riguardante i due paesi, che Ë stato l’avvento del contingente militare di spedizione brasiliana per combattere nella seconda guerra mondiale a fianco delle armate alleati per la liberazione d’Italia.
Infine, abbiamo deciso di diffondere la realizzazione di questi progetti sul suolo italiano anche in Brasile, pubblicando su siti web e media specializzati il corso della produzione cinematografica, cosÏ come le nostre attivit‡† culturali che stiamo programmando.
