In early June 1940, immediately Italy entered the Second World War, all Italian male civilians between the ages of 18 and 70 years living in the UK were arrested by the police and military to be interned under instructions of the War Cabinet.
Following a decision to transport a number of internees to Canada and Australia the liner “Arandora Star” left Liverpool for Canada carrying some 1,570 Italian, German and Jewish internees, mostly shop owners, barbers, market salesmen and such like who had been arrested by the British as they were considered a threat once Italy had allied with Germany.
The ship was also carrying 200 troops to guard the prisoners and some heavy machine guns for protection.
It was the 2nd of July 1940, the Arandora Star’s third day at sea and the captain was unhappy with the weather as it was flat calm and they were clearly visible to enemy ships.
Meanwhile a German U-boat captain called Prien was on his way back to Germany and not very happy either.
Prien was aged just 32 and was already a war hero, but one of his students, a captain Endrass, was set to receive an award for the highest tonnage of ships sunk within that month. This obviously did not sit well with his master’s ego.
Prien was on his way home with seemingly no hope of beating Endrass, as he was 5,000 tonnes short of doing so and had no deck ammunition and only one torpedo.
Then on July the 2nd he spotted the Arandora Star and sank her with his remaining torpedo.
At 07.58 hours on 2 July 1940 the unescorted Arandora Star (Master Edgar Wallace Moulton) was hit by one torpedo from U-47 about 125 miles west by north of Malin Head, Co. Donegal and foundered later in 56°30N/10°38W. The ship had 479 German internees, 734 Italian internees, 86 German prisoners-of-war and 200 military guards on board. The master, 12 officers, 42 crewmen, 37 guards, 470 Italians and 243 Germans were lost. 119 crew members, 163 guards and 586 Italians and Germans were picked up by HMCS St. Laurent (H 83) (Cdr H.G. De Wolf, RCN) and landed at Greenock. – source
The Italians began clambering into the lifeboats to save themselves from drowning but the British shot holes in the lifeboats to stop them from escaping.

All’inizio di giugno 1940, appena l’Italia entrò nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, tutti i cittadini italiani di sesso maschile tra i 18 e i 70 anni residenti nel Regno Unito furono arrestati dalla polizia e dall’esercito per essere internati su istruzioni del Gabinetto di Guerra.
In seguito alla decisione di trasportare un certo numero di internati in Canada e Australia, il transatlantico “Arandora Star” lasciò Liverpool alla volta del Canada, trasportando circa 1.570 internati italiani, tedeschi ed ebrei, per lo più proprietari di negozi, barbieri, venditori di mercato e simili, che erano stati arrestati dagli inglesi in quanto considerati una minaccia una volta che l’Italia si era alleata con la Germania.
La nave trasportava anche 200 soldati per sorvegliare i prigionieri e alcune mitragliatrici pesanti per la protezione.
Era il 2 luglio 1940, il terzo giorno in mare dell’Arandora Star, e il capitano non era contento del tempo perché c’era una calma piatta e erano chiaramente visibili alle navi nemiche.
Nel frattempo, un capitano di un U-Boot tedesco chiamato Prien stava tornando in Germania e non era molto felice neanche lui.
Prien aveva solo 32 anni ed era già un eroe di guerra, ma uno dei suoi allievi, un capitano Endrass, stava per ricevere un premio per il maggior tonnellaggio di navi affondate in quel mese. Ovviamente questo non andava bene all’ego del suo maestro.
Prien stava tornando a casa senza speranze di superare Endrass, poiché gli mancavano 5.000 tonnellate per farlo e non aveva munizioni in coperta e solo un siluro.
Poi, il 2 luglio, avvistò l’Arandora Star e la affondò con l’ultimo siluro rimasto.
Alle 07.58 del 2 luglio 1940, l’Arandora Star non scortata (Comandante Edgar Wallace Moulton) fu colpita da un siluro dell’U-47 a circa 125 miglia a ovest-nord di Malin Head, nella Contea di Donegal, e affondò più tardi a 56°30N/10°38W. A bordo c’erano 479 internati tedeschi, 734 internati italiani, 86 prigionieri di guerra tedeschi e 200 militari di scorta. Il comandante, 12 ufficiali, 42 membri dell’equipaggio, 37 guardie, 470 italiani e 243 tedeschi persero la vita. 119 membri dell’equipaggio, 163 guardie e 586 italiani e tedeschi furono recuperati dall’HMCS St. Laurent (H 83) (Cdr H.G. De Wolf, RCN) e sbarcati a Greenock. – fonte
Gli italiani iniziarono a salire sulle scialuppe di salvataggio per salvarsi dall’annegamento, ma i britannici fecero dei colpi sulle scialuppe per impedire loro di fuggire.
Persero la vita 682 persone, tra cui 200 soldati (lista completa qui). Gli italiani sopravvissuti furono rimpatriati a Liverpool, dove la settimana successiva furono trasportati nei campi di prigionia in Australia. – fonte – BBC
