The exhibition “Kraczyna 50 years in Barga”opened today and will stay open until the 3rd September at the Santa Elisabetta Conservatory in Barga Vecchia.
The exhibition paid homage to Swietlan Nicholas Kraczyna, an internationally acclaimed master engraver who has made the medieval city of Barga his summer retreat since 1973.
The exhibition, promoted by the Comune of Barga, in collaboration with the Giovanni Pascoli Foundation and the Santa Elisabetta Conservatory Foundation, under the patronage of the Tuscany Region and with the support of Villa Pascoli Onlus, included approximately 100 works ranging from 1973 to 2023, all dedicated to the city of Barga and the landscape of Garfagnana.
The artworks primarily consisted of engravings – etchings, aquatints, drypoints, and multiple plates – but also included oil paintings on canvas, always focusing on the themes of Barga, alongside the artist’s usual production related to mythology, music, and folklore.
It was a 50-year artistic journey that depicted the citadel from various perspectives; from the iconic Barga 1974 poster to a dreamlike, surreal Barga, to the very recent drypoints, where female figures merged with the lush vegetation that surrounded one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.
During the exhibition, an imposing installation created from Kraczyna’s works: a combination of the iconic Barga Castle with the character of Icarus, which the artist had depicted multiple times was added to the the facade of the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga vecchia.

La mostra “Kraczyna 50 anni a Barga”, dal 2 luglio al 3 settembre 2023 presso il Conservatorio Santa Elisabetta, rendeva omaggio a Swietlan Nicholas Kraczyna, un rinomato maestro incisore internazionale che aveva trasformato la città medievale di Barga nel suo ritiro estivo dal 1973.
Promossa dal Comune di Barga, in collaborazione con la Fondazione Giovanni Pascoli e la Fondazione Conservatorio Santa Elisabetta, con il patrocinio della Regione Toscana e il sostegno di Villa Pascoli Onlus, la mostra è stata inaugurata domenica 2 luglio alla presenza dell’artista.
La mostra includeva circa 100 opere che spaziavano dal 1973 al 2023, tutte dedicate alla città di Barga e al paesaggio della Garfagnana.
Le opere d’arte consistevano principalmente in incisioni – acquetinte, acqueforti, puntesecche e plurilastre – ma includevano anche dipinti ad olio su tela, sempre incentrati sui temi di Barga, accanto alla produzione abituale dell’artista legata alla mitologia, alla musica e al folklore.
È stato un percorso artistico di 50 anni che ha rappresentato la cittadella da diverse prospettive; dal poster iconico di Barga 1974 a una Barga onirica e surreale, fino alle puntesecche più recenti, in cui le figure femminili si fondevano con la rigogliosa vegetazione che circondava una delle città più belle d’Italia.
Durante la mostra, è stata aggiunta alla facciata del Teatro dei Differenti nella Barga vecchia un’imponente installazione creata dalle opere di Kraczyna: una combinazione dell’iconico Castello di Barga con il personaggio di Icaro, che l’artista aveva dipinto più volte.
