Barga, from Pascoli to urban art: the “I Am Poetry” anthology exhibition showcased the works of Ericailcane, Zed1, Bastardilla, and Francesco Barbieri on October 7th at 6:00 PM – Barga Municipal Gallery.
From October 7th to November 19th, the Municipal Gallery in the area where the Poet lived hosts the colourful biographies of some of the most prominent national and international urban artists, who were invited to Garfagnana to revisit mills, schools, and other buildings through murals in dialogue with nature.
The first murals were in progress in Fosciandora, Gallicano, and Pieve Fosciana.

From October 7th to November 19th, the Barga Municipal Gallery hosts the exhibition “I Am Poetry,” an anthology featuring works by some of the most renowned national and international urban artists, including Ericailcane, Zed1, Bastardilla, and Francesco Barbieri.
“I Am Poetry” is curated by Gian Guido Grassi with the organization of the stART – Open your eyes association and the sponsorship of the Comune of Barga.
“The title serves as a reminder to everyone: it reminds us that each of us has stories, values within, and is, in essence, poetry. For this reason, the artists have chosen to predominantly showcase illustrated works dedicated to distinctive figures, characters who somehow embody their life experiences. Visiting the exhibition means immersing oneself in their stories,” says Gian Guido Grassi.
“Ericailcane and Bastardilla reproduce anthropomorphic animals, seemingly drawn from Aesop’s fables, to make us reflect on social aspects, occasionally using satire. Zed1 has made the puppet his iconic figure, an archetype that encapsulates the theme of human fragility. His dolls bring weaknesses beyond the mask, the cracks beneath the surface. Francesco Barbieri draws inspiration from the world of cartoons, with references to Walt Disney’s pop culture that speak to the vices and virtues of human beings,” explains the curator.
“With this exhibition, the municipal gallery once again establishes itself for the quality and intensity of the exhibited works. InComune is a project born in collaboration with the comune of Barga and has given us great cultural satisfaction. For this, we can thank Gianguido Grassi, Kerry Bell, and Giorgia Madiai for their work and for this significant cultural journey,” – Mayor Caterina Campani.
“A selection of significant works that attest to the artistic evolution of these authors, who, according to their interpretation, convey their way of creating poetry through colors. Art knows no time limits, and it is particularly important that the enjoyment of these works is not limited to the narrow scope of museums but that everyone can benefit from them to enrich themselves through street art. Barga, once again through this initiative, keeps Pascoli’s legacy alive through a new language. This is why I am very pleased that the insight of the Regional Council has had a positive impact on our territory,” adds Regional Councillor Mario Puppa.

“I Am Poetry” is part of the broader project “InComune,” conceived by artists Giorgia Madiai and Kerry Bell, with the aim of bringing together the artistic community of the region, inviting creatives living in and connected to the Serchio Valley, Garfagnana, and Lucchesia to participate.
Ericailcane, Zed1, and Bastardilla are currently in Garfagnana, working on their artworks in some of the most characteristic villages. As part of the widespread art project coordinated by Gian Guido Grassi and the stArt Open Your Eyes association, these three artists will paint murals in the municipalities of Fosciandora (Lupinaia and Ceserana fractions), Gallicano, and Pieve Fosciana.
The project, endorsed by the involved municipalities, is supported by the Tuscany Regional Council and is part of a larger urban regeneration project through art. The operation in Garfagnana began last summer with the creation of the first murals by Hitnes in the municipalities of Castiglione di Garfagnana and Fosciandora. The murals will be erected in the coming weeks on ancient mills, schools, and private buildings, in dialogue with nature and the traditions of Garfagnana.

The stART – Open your eyes association was founded in June 2017 and involves a team of young creatives under 35 with complementary skills (photographer, videomaker, press office, and social media marketing, assistants). They have organized important international exhibitions, festivals, shows, and publications. The curator is Gian Guido Maria Grassi, born in Lucca in 1988.
Gian Guido Grassi (1988) is a contemporary art curator. He inherited this passion from his family and in 2017, he founded stART – Open your eyes, through which he realizes artistic projects, specializing in street art and urban regeneration. He directs festivals, curates and organizes exhibitions in institutional and private spaces, writes articles, publishes books, and collaborates with Italian and foreign artists such as the Russian Alexey Morosov and the Uruguayan Pablo Atchugarry. Among the most important exhibitions are “ATTITUDE / Graffiti Writing, Street art, Neo muralismo” at Palazzo Blu in Pisa and “PABLO ATCHUGARRY / Il risveglio della natura,” an exhibition spread throughout the historic center of Lucca.
Ericailcane: Street artist (and illustrator), one of the most mysterious and appreciated in our country, has been flooding the streets of cities with his murals for several years. From Bologna to the weathered walls of half of Italy, Europe, and the world. More than an artist, he is a creator of nightmares and dreams in the form of animals, fairy-tale creatures emerging from a medieval engraving and landing on dilapidated buildings and concrete monsters. A universe that draws heavily from pop culture and then turns it inside out to create living allegories of nature, capable of reclaiming space with grotesque and surreal characters. Recently, his fame has been on the rise, and after exhibiting in important Italian museums/spaces/initiatives, he has also been adopted by Pictures On The Walls, a branch of the legendary London gallery Lazarides, known for artists such as Banksy, Stanley Donwood, and 3D. At Illuminati, he presented excerpts from his new publication “Il Buio.”
ZED1 – Marco Burresi, born in Florence in 1977, grew up and lived in Certaldo. He graduated from the Institute of Advertising Graphics. He started painting on the streets as a teenager, creating his first graffiti in 1992 in Viareggio, where he became a part of the KNM crew, a group of friends and young writers who animated the scene during those years, actively participating in Panico Totale. Zed1 developed his own research and illustration, creating a personal imaginary world with surreal and fairy-tale settings inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, puppets, dolls, circus figures, and elements from fantasy literature. The artist depicted the theater of life on the stage of his works: his characters drawn from the world of childhood revealed, behind an apparent innocence, aspects that were less reassuring and at times grotesque, telling the story of a more adult and real world. This visual short circuit, melancholic and sometimes terribly ironic, revealed our vulnerabilities and those of a constantly uncertain world, refraining from imposing definitive solutions and prompting introspection in the viewer. In recent years, Zed1 had developed the technique of Second Skin, which allowed him to expand interaction with the audience from the intimate sphere to collective action: he applied an additional layer, a second skin, to a permanent mural, which, over time and with the intervention of passersby or atmospheric agents, faded away, revealing new and unexpected meanings along with the original painting underneath.
Francesco Barbieri (born in 1976) was an international artist working in contemporary post-graffiti. Before dedicating himself to painting on canvas, he had been a significant figure in the European graffiti-writing scene for many years. In recent years, his work on canvas had explored various subjects borrowed from the typical folklore of graffiti. Currently, his production focused on constructing urban scenarios where trains and railways often played central roles. In his works, he explored the marginality of urban life, representing the “no man’s land” that existed at the geographical and social borders of modern cities. With his distinctive visual language, Barbieri conveyed the emotions experienced on the streets he had explored for years. In fact, travel and the lifestyle associated with it were fundamental elements of his art. Over the past twenty years, he had regularly visited cities like New York and San Francisco in the United States, Berlin and Stockholm in Europe, and Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing in China, solely with the purpose of discovering the hidden corners of these cities.
Bastardilla is a renowned Colombian artist from Bogotá who currently lived and worked between London and Italy. Her work, although central to the city, was now recognized worldwide. Not much was known about the artist, in part because she chose to remain anonymous. In one of the few interviews she did for an eight-part documentary series called “Défense d’Afficher,” Bastardilla commented that the idea of anonymity was particularly appealing “in a world where everyone promotes their own image.” Much of her work focused on feminist themes, the processes of Latin American women, and the fight to end violence in South America. Much of that violence was due to abuse of power, especially among the police forces. This, apparently, was universal.

Barga (Lucca), 5 ottobre 2023 – Dalle composizioni di Giovanni Pascoli all’arte urbana: Barga celebra il “suo” poeta attraverso il linguaggio più contemporaneo: dal 7 ottobre al 19 novembre la Galleria Comunale di Barga ospita la mostra “Io sono Poesia”, un’antologica con le opere di alcuni tra gli artisti urbani più noti a livello nazionale e internazionale, Ericailcane, Zed1, Bastardilla e Francesco Barbieri. “Io sono Poesia” è curata da Gian Guido Grassi con l’organizzazione dell’associazione stART – Open your eyes e il patrocinio del Comune di Barga. L’opening è in programma sabato 7 ottobre alle ore 18 alla Galleria Comunale, alla presenza del curatore e della sindaca di Barga Caterina Campani.
“Il titolo è un memento per ogni persona: ci ricorda che ognuno di noi ha dentro delle storie, dei valori, è di per sé una poesia. Gli artisti hanno scelto per questo di portare in mostra prevalentemente opere illustrate, dedicate a figure caratteristiche, personaggi che incarnano in qualche modo il loro vissuto. Visitare la mostra significa immergersi nelle loro storie”, dichiara Gian Guido Grassi.
“Ericailcane e Bastardilla riproducono animali antropomorfi, che sembrano usciti dalle favole di Esopo per farci riflettere su aspetti sociali, usando a tratti la satira. Zed1 ha fatto del burattino la sua figura iconica, un archetipo che contiene in sé il tema della fragilità umana. Le sue bambole portano in scena le debolezze oltre la maschera, le crepe sotto la vernice. Francesco Barbieri si ispira al mondo dei cartoon, con un richiamo al mondo pop di Walt Disney che ci parlano di vizi e virtù degli esseri umani”, illustra il curatore.
“Con questa mostra la galleria comunale si afferma ancora una volta per la qualità e l’intensità delle opere esposte. Incomune è un progetto nato in collaborazione con il comune di barga e ci sta dando molte soddisfazioni a livello culturale e di questo non possiamo che ringraziare Gianguido Grassi Kerry Bell e Giorgia Madiai per il lavoro svolto e per questo percorso culturale di grande rilievo.” Prosegue la Sindaca Caterina Campani.
“Una selezione di opere significative che attestano l’evoluzione artistica di questi autori che, secondo la propria interpretazione, trasmettono il loro modo di fare poesia con i colori. L’arte non ha limiti temporali è particolarmente importante che la fruizione di queste opere non sia solamente riservata all’ambito circoscritto dei musei ma che tutti ne possano beneficiare per arricchirsi attraverso la street art. Barga ancora una volta tramite questa iniziativa, mantiene alta l’eredità di Pascoli, attraverso un nuovo linguaggio. Anche per questo sono molto soddisfatto che l’intuizione del Consiglio regionale abbia avuto una positiva ricaduta sul nostro territorio”, aggiunge il consigliere regionale Mario Puppa.

“Io sono Poesia” fa parte del più ampio progetto “InComune”, ideato dalle artiste Giorgia Madiai e Kerry Bell, con l’obiettivo di aggregare la comunità artistica del territorio, invitando a partecipare i creativi che vivono e sono legati alla Valle del Serchio, alla Garfagnana e alla Lucchesia.
Ericailcane, Zed1 e Bastardilla sono infatti in questi giorni impegnati in Garfagnana per rivisitare con le proprie opere alcuni dei borghi più caratteristici: nell’ambito del progetto di arte diffusa coordinato dallo stesso Gian Guido Grassi e dall’associazione stArt Open Your Eyes, i tre artisti dipingeranno alcuni murales nei comuni di Fosciandora (frazioni di Lupinaia e Ceserana), Gallicano e Pieve Fosciana.
Il progetto, patrocinato dai comuni coinvolti, gode del sostegno del Consiglio della Regione Toscana e si articola all’interno di un più ampio progetto di rigenerazione urbana attraverso l’arte. L’operazione in Garfagnana è cominciata la scorsa estate, con la realizzazione dei primi murales a opera di Hitnes nei comuni di Castiglione di Garfagnana e Fosciandora. I murales sorgeranno nell’arco delle prossime settimane su antichi mulini, scuole ed edifici privati, in dialogo con la natura e le tradizioni della Garfagnana.

ERICAILCANE. Street artist (ma anche illustratore) tra i più misteriosi e apprezzati del nostro Paese, Ericailcane inonda da diversi anni le strade delle città con i suoi murales. Da Bologna ai muri scrostati di mezza Italia, Europa e mondo. Più che un artista un creatore di incubi e sogni sotto forma di animali, esseri favolistici sbucati fuori da un’incisione medioevale e piombati su palazzi fatiscenti e mostri di cemento. Un universo che attinge a piene mani dalla cultura pop per poi rivoltarla come un calzino e generare allegorie viventi della natura, capace di riprendersi lo spazio sottratto con personaggi grotteschi e surreali. Ultimamente la sua fama è in forte ascesa e – dopo aver esposto in importanti musei/spazi/iniziative italiane – è stato recentemente adottato anche da Pictures On The Walls, declinazione della mitica galleria londinese Lazarides, madre per artisti quali Banksy, Stanley Donwood e 3D. ZED1 – Marco Burresi, nato a Firenze nel 1977, è cresciuto e vive a Certaldo; si è diplomato all’Istituto di Grafica Pubblicitaria. Inizia a dipingere in strada da adolescente realizzando il suo primo graffito nel 1992 a Viareggio dove entra a far parte della crew KNM, un gruppo di amici e giovani writers che ha animato la scena di quegli anni partecipando attivamente a Panico Totale. Zed1 sviluppa così una propria ricerca e illustrazione, creando un immaginario personale con ambientazioni surreali e fiabesche abitate da animali antropomorfi, burattini, bambole, figure circensi e dalla letteratura fantastica. L’artista raffigura sul palcoscenico delle proprie opere il teatrino della vita: i suoi personaggi tratti dal mondo dell’infanzia mostrano dietro a un’apparentemente innocenza aspetti meno rassicuranti e a tratti grotteschi, raccontando di un mondo più adulto e reale. Questo cortocircuito visivo, malinconico e talvolta terribilmente ironico, ci svela le nostre fragilità e quelle di un mondo costantemente in bilico astenendosi dall’imporre soluzioni definitive e suscitando nello spettatore una riflessione interiore. Negli ultimi anni Zed1 ha sviluppato la tecnica del Second Skin che ha permesso di spingere l’interazione con il pubblico dalla sfera intima al gesto collettivo: applica a un murale permanente un ulteriore strato, una seconda pelle, che col passare del tempo e grazie all’intervento dei passanti o agli agenti atmosferici, si perde rivelando, insieme al dipinto originale sottostante, nuovi e imprevisti significati.
Francesco Barbieri (classe 1976) è un artista internazionale che lavora nel post-graffitismo contemporaneo. Prima di dedicarsi alla pittura su tela è stato per anni una figura importante nella scena europea del graffiti-writing. Con il suo lavoro su tela degli ultimi anni ha esplorato molteplici soggetti mutuati dal folklore tipico dei graffiti. Al momento la sua produzione si concentra sulla costruzione di scenari urbani dove spesso il treno e la ferrovia sono elementi centrali. Nelle sue opere esplora la marginalità della vita metropolitana, rappresentando le “terre di nessuno” che si trovano ai confini geografici e sociali delle città moderne. Con il suo peculiare linguaggio visivo Barbieri restituisce nella pittura le emozioni sperimentate nelle strade che ha esplorato per anni: di fatto il viaggio e lo stile di vita ad esso legato sono elementi fondamentali della sua arte, e negli ultimi venti anni ha visitato regolarmente New York e San Francisco negli Stati Uniti, Berlino e Stoccolma in Europa, Pechino, Shanghai e Nanchino in Cina, solo con lo scopo di scoprire gli angoli più nascosti di queste città.
Bastardilla è una rinomata artista colombiana Bogotá che attualmente vive e lavora tra Londra e l’Italia. Il suo lavoro, sebbene centrale per la città, è ora riconosciuto in tutto il mondo. Non si sa molto sull’artista, in parte perché sceglie di rimanere anonima. In una delle poche interviste che ha fatto per una serie di documentari in 8 parti chiamata ” Défense d’Afficher “, Bastardilla commenta che l’idea di anonimato è particolarmente allettante “in un mondo in cui ognuno promuove la propria immagine”. Gran parte del suo lavoro è incentrato sui temi del femminismo, i processi delle donne latinoamericane e la lotta per porre fine alla violenza in Sud America. Gran parte di quella violenza è dovuta all’abuso di potere, in particolare tra le forze di polizia. Questo, a quanto pare, è universale.
