The music of Stevie Wonder took centre stage at BargaJazz on 20 August when Claudia Tellini brought her project “Stevland” to the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga.
Tellini was joined by four established musicians from the Tuscan jazz scene: Nicola Vernuccio on double bass, Riccardo Galardini on guitar, Emanuele Parrini on violin and Walter Paoli on drums.
“Stevland”, a project which Tellini and the group had been developing for several years, looked particularly at the music created by Wonder as a young man, at the moment when he was beginning to move beyond the restrictions of his early career and establish his own artistic identity.
It was a crucial period in Wonder’s development. Still only in his twenties, he was beginning to take greater control of his music and to create the remarkable series of recordings which would establish him as one of the defining musicians and songwriters of his generation.
But the project was not simply a collection of Stevie Wonder songs.
At the centre of “Stevland” were also the ideas contained within the music. Wonder’s lyrics increasingly addressed civil rights, freedom, resistance and the social and political realities surrounding him. Tellini and the musicians used those themes as a starting point, combining Wonder’s repertoire with their own arrangements and musical fragments.
Texts by Pier Paolo Pasolini and George Orwell were also woven into the project, extending the dialogue between music, politics and ideas of individual freedom.
The concert fitted particularly well into this year’s BargaJazz Festival, which had chosen the music of Stevie Wonder as the central theme of its 2026 edition.
La musica di Stevie Wonder è stata protagonista a BargaJazz il 20 agosto, quando Claudia Tellini ha portato il suo progetto “Stevland” al Teatro dei Differenti di Barga.
Tellini era accompagnata da quattro affermati musicisti della scena jazz toscana: Nicola Vernuccio al contrabbasso, Riccardo Galardini alla chitarra, Emanuele Parrini al violino e Walter Paoli alla batteria.
“Stevland”, progetto che Tellini e il gruppo portavano avanti da diversi anni, si è concentrato in particolare sulla musica composta da Wonder da giovane, nel momento in cui cominciava a superare i limiti imposti agli inizi della sua carriera e ad affermare una propria identità artistica.
Fu un periodo fondamentale nella crescita di Wonder. Ancora poco più che ventenne, iniziava ad assumere un maggiore controllo sulla propria musica e a creare quella straordinaria serie di registrazioni che lo avrebbe consacrato come uno dei musicisti e autori più importanti della sua generazione.
Ma il progetto non era semplicemente una raccolta di canzoni di Stevie Wonder.
Al centro di “Stevland” c’erano anche le idee contenute nella sua musica. I testi di Wonder affrontavano sempre più temi come i diritti civili, la libertà, la resistenza e la realtà sociale e politica che lo circondava. Tellini e i musicisti hanno utilizzato questi temi come punto di partenza, combinando il repertorio di Wonder con propri arrangiamenti e frammenti musicali.
Nel progetto sono stati inseriti anche testi di Pier Paolo Pasolini e George Orwell, ampliando ulteriormente il dialogo tra musica, politica e idee di libertà individuale.
Il concerto si è inserito particolarmente bene nel programma di BargaJazz di quest’anno, che ha scelto proprio la musica di Stevie Wonder come tema centrale dell’edizione 2026.
