The 37th edition of the BargaJazz Jazz Orchestra Arrangement and Composition Competition got underway at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga, with the BargaJazz Orchestra conducted by Maestro Mario Raja once again at the centre of the evening.
The 18-piece orchestra had come together for its annual appointment with the competition, rehearsing and performing new music selected from the many scores submitted to BargaJazz from composers and arrangers.
Friday evening was dedicated to original compositions, with six works selected for performance: “Bruncu Meyer” by Stefano Gullo, “Synthesis” by Laura Giulia Veltri, “Seriously?” by Piotr Scholz, “El Rey De Ottkaring” by Martin Ariel Iaies, “Borrowed Time” by Giuseppe Savarese and “The Line” by Caroline Thon.
It was an evening that demonstrated one of the characteristics that has distinguished BargaJazz for almost four decades. Rather than relying solely on established repertoire, the competition places new music directly in front of a full jazz orchestra, giving composers and arrangers the opportunity to hear their work performed by musicians brought together specifically for the festival.
Under the direction of Mario Raja, the BargaJazz Orchestra once again became the working heart of the competition, transforming the scores submitted during the year into live performances on the stage of the Teatro dei Differenti.
Joining the orchestra as guest for the evening was the singer Sara Maghelli.

La 37ª edizione del Concorso di arrangiamento e composizione per orchestra jazz di BargaJazz ha preso il via al Teatro dei Differenti di Barga, con la BargaJazz Orchestra, diretta dal Maestro Mario Raja, ancora una volta al centro della serata.
L’orchestra, composta da 18 elementi, si è riunita per il suo appuntamento annuale con il concorso, provando ed eseguendo nuove musiche selezionate tra le numerose partiture inviate ogni anno a BargaJazz da compositori e arrangiatori.
La serata di venerdì è stata dedicata alle composizioni originali, con sei brani selezionati per l’esecuzione: “Bruncu Meyer” di Stefano Gullo, “Synthesis” di Laura Giulia Veltri, “Seriously?” di Piotr Scholz, “El Rey De Ottkaring” di Martin Ariel Iaies, “Borrowed Time” di Giuseppe Savarese e “The Line” di Caroline Thon.
È stata una serata che ha messo ancora una volta in evidenza una delle caratteristiche che distinguono BargaJazz da quasi quattro decenni. Invece di affidarsi soltanto a un repertorio già consolidato, il concorso porta nuove musiche direttamente davanti a una vera orchestra jazz, offrendo a compositori e arrangiatori l’opportunità di ascoltare le proprie opere eseguite da musicisti riuniti appositamente per il festival.
Sotto la direzione di Mario Raja, la BargaJazz Orchestra è tornata così ad essere il cuore operativo del concorso, trasformando le partiture arrivate durante l’anno in musica dal vivo sul palcoscenico del Teatro dei Differenti.
Ospite della serata, insieme all’orchestra, è stata la cantante Sara Maghelli.
