Barga’s cats take their story to the film festival circuit
A film made by American students during a summer course in Barga has travelled far beyond the streets where it was filmed, picking up awards and selections at film festivals in the United States.
Per Amore Dei Gatti (For the Love of Cats) was made by students from the University of North Georgia’s School of Communication, Film and Theatre during its Film in Italy programme. The course brings students to Barga to learn filmmaking on location, with Casa Cordati in Barga Vecchia serving as their base.
The short documentary began with something the filmmakers noticed almost immediately after arriving: Barga’s cats.
Rather than simply making a film about animals, the students became interested in the particular relationship between the cats and the people around them — animals wandering freely through streets and piazzas while being recognised, fed, talked to and looked after by local residents.
Director Calvin Bowers described the cats as seeming to belong not simply to individual owners but, in a sense, to the whole community.
The resulting eight-and-a-half-minute documentary follows Bowers, Olivia Claudon, Jarred Taber and Grant Aldinger as they meet local cat lovers and explore the world of Barga’s gattare and its street-trotting feline population. Local participants included Franco Marasa, Virginia Fabbri, Manuela Bollati and Dalida Gonnella.
What began as a student film made during their time in Barga has since developed a considerable life of its own.
For the Love of Cats received an Award of Excellence in Documentary at the Georgia Communication Association Film Festival, Best Editing at both the Bobcat Film Festival and Backlight Film Festival, and Best Undergraduate Film at the South Georgia Film Festival.
It subsequently won Best Student Short at BEYOND: The Cary Film Festival and has continued to appear on the festival circuit, including an official selection at NFFTY.
The film was directed, written and edited by Calvin Bowers, produced by Jarred Taber, with Grant Aldinger as first assistant director and Olivia Claudon as director of photography. Giuseppe Sanfilippo provided the narration and Ty Bowers composed the music.
For a film that began with four students walking through Barga and noticing its cats, Per Amore Dei Gatti has become something rather larger: a small portrait of the city and the relationship between its people, its streets and the animals that share them.
I gatti di Barga arrivano nei festival cinematografici
Un film realizzato da studenti americani durante un corso estivo a Barga ha viaggiato ben oltre le strade in cui è stato girato, ottenendo premi e selezioni in diversi festival cinematografici negli Stati Uniti.
Per Amore Dei Gatti (For the Love of Cats) è stato realizzato dagli studenti della School of Communication, Film and Theatre della University of North Georgia durante il programma Film in Italy. Il corso porta ogni anno giovani studenti di cinema a Barga per imparare lavorando direttamente sul campo, con Casa Cordati, nel centro storico, come base.
L’idea del documentario è nata da qualcosa che i giovani filmmaker hanno notato quasi subito dopo il loro arrivo: i gatti di Barga.
Più che realizzare semplicemente un film sugli animali, gli studenti si sono interessati al particolare rapporto che esiste tra i gatti e le persone che vivono intorno a loro: animali che si muovono liberamente per strade e piazze, ma che vengono riconosciuti, nutriti, chiamati per nome e accuditi dagli abitanti.
Il regista Calvin Bowers ha raccontato come i gatti sembrassero appartenere non soltanto ai singoli proprietari, ma in qualche modo all’intera comunità.
Il documentario, della durata di circa otto minuti e mezzo, segue Bowers, Olivia Claudon, Jarred Taber e Grant Aldinger mentre incontrano gli amanti dei gatti del posto ed entrano nel particolare mondo dei felini che popolano Barga e delle sue gattare. Tra le persone di Barga che hanno partecipato al film figurano Franco Marasa, Virginia Fabbri, Manuela Bollati e Dalida Gonnella.
Quello che era iniziato come un progetto studentesco realizzato durante il soggiorno a Barga ha poi cominciato una vita propria nel circuito dei festival.
For the Love of Cats ha ricevuto il premio Documentary Excellence al GCA Film Festival, il premio per il Best Editing al Bobcat Film Festival e al Backlight Film Festival e quello per il Best Undergraduate Film al South Georgia Film Festival.
Il documentario ha inoltre ottenuto il premio Best Student Film al BEYOND: The Cary Film Festival ed è stato selezionato ufficialmente per NFFTY, il Georgia Film Festival e l’Atlanta Underground Film Festival.
Il film è stato diretto, scritto e montato da Calvin Bowers, prodotto da Jarred Taber, con Grant Aldinger come primo assistente alla regia e Olivia Claudon alla direzione della fotografia. La voce narrante è di Giuseppe Sanfilippo, mentre le musiche sono state composte da Ty Bowers.
Partito da quattro studenti che camminavano per Barga osservando i suoi gatti, Per Amore Dei Gatti è diventato qualcosa di più: un piccolo ritratto della città e del particolare rapporto tra le persone, le strade e gli animali che le condividono.
