Barga Jazz Club opens the 2026/27 season

Standing Room Only as Barga Jazz Club Opens Its New Season

The Barga Jazz Club could hardly have wished for a better start to its new season on Saturday evening, 24th October. The club in Via del Pretorio, in the heart of Barga Vecchia, was packed to capacity, with standing room only and people actually waiting outside for a chance to get in.

And it wasn’t just the audience that had turned out in force. Musicians seemed to be everywhere, many of them waiting patiently for their opportunity to get up on stage and join the opening night’s jam session.

The evening began with Francesco Massagli on piano, Leonardo Gnesi on double bass, Federico Cardelli on drums and Alessandro Rizzardi on saxophone, setting the music in motion before the stage opened up to the other musicians.

From then on, the evening developed into exactly what a jazz club should be about — musicians coming together, exchanging ideas, listening to each other and making music without the formal structure of a conventional concert.

There was a real sense of excitement in the room, not simply because of the number of people present, but because so many musicians had come along specifically to play. With such a large gathering of players, the difficulty was not finding someone willing to join the session, but finding enough time and space for everyone to have their turn.

The Barga Jazz Club has long been an important part of the city’s musical life, providing a place where established musicians and younger players can meet on equal terms, experiment and enjoy the freedom that makes jazz such a distinctive form of music.

Saturday night’s opening demonstrated that the enthusiasm for live jazz in Barga remains as strong as ever.

With the club full, musicians queuing to play and an audience prepared to wait outside rather than miss the evening, the new season could scarcely have begun on a more encouraging note.
