A message from the Director of the Festival, Nicholas Hunt

This year’s festival is different. Having reached 40, we felt we needed to take a moment and look at where we have come from and perhaps consider where we are going from here. We are very happy with so much we have done, but as always we feel we need to do better, to invent something new, to find new ways to produce, perform and promote opera, both as a spectacle and in terms of the research into lesser known works which we believe is what we do best. So, we have decided, for the first time, to retrieve one of the operas that has had the greatest success at the Festival in the past, and at the time, represented one of our very fortunate discoveries. I pazzi per progetto (The mad by design) by Gaetano Donizetti was first performed in Naples on the 6th of February 1830, for a special gala evening, and was subsequently revived for a few years both in Naples and Palermo. Then nothing more was heard of it until Bruno Rigacci, artistic director of Opera Barga in the Seventies, decided to stage it for the first time in modern days in Barga. It has since been staged quite often, lastly in Bergamo in 2000 to our knowledge, but we feel that this year it is right for us to take a step back to what we were doing a few years ago, in order to then move on.

And what about the celebrations? Together with the Mayor of Barga, Umberto Sereni, it has been decided that from now on the Festival will officially begin on the 25th of July each year, this being the day of the patron saint, which should be suitably auspicious. We will begin this 40th year with a concert reproducing the programme almost to the letter of the Festival’s first season: Arias and Scenes from Rigoletto, Così fan tutte and Fidelio, sung by Francesco Meli and Sabrina Gamberoni, two young singers who are already singing in major theatres. The Festival has established a special prize for Young Singers of Promise, which will be a feature of the opening concert from now on. Franceso Meli and Sabrina Gamberoni will be the first recipients.

There will also be a series of concerts by Ensemble Le Musiche, organised in collaboration with Simone Bernardini. Following the incredible effort of performing the entire series of Mozart’s piano concerti last year, this year there will be a more relaxed look at Bach chamber music and works by other composers including Dvorak and Grieg. These concerts will take place not just in Barga, but also in the twinned medieval villages of Bagnone, near the sea in the province of Massa Carrara, and in Cutigliano , a small mountain village in the province of Pistoia.

The Festival closes on 8 August with a tribute to the founders of the Festival, Peter Hunt and Gillian Armitage, featuring English chamber works by Elgar, Walton and Britten.

Orchestra Nazionale di Karelia Direttore Simone Bernardini PROGRAMMA MUSICA NEI BORGHI 2007 Il Festival Opera Barga, come già l’anno scorso, organizza un evento itinerante di musica da camera di altissimo livello con la propria orchestra residente Ensemble le Musiche, un’orchestra da camera a geometria variabile (dal duo alla piena orchestra da camera di 30 elementi), inventata e promossa da Simone Bernardini, giovanissimo primo violino titolare dei Berliner Philarmoniker, si è diplomato in violino dal Conservatoire Nationale Superiore di Parigi, e perfezionato a New York sotto la guida di Isaac Stern e Itzack Perlman. Dal 2005 è docente alla Scuola di Musica di Fiesole dove in precedenza ha studiato con Norbert Brainin.

Dedito alla direzione oltre che allo strumento, Bernardini insieme ad altri suoi compagni della scuola di musica di Fiesole, altri colleghi della sua orchestra, della European Chamber Orchestra dove suona regolarmente e perfino dell’Orchestra della Scala dove recentemente è stato chiamato come spalla, si riuniscono per studiare, eseguire e concertare musica da camera in tre ameni borghi medievali dell’Appenino Toscano, Bagnone, bagnato, come dice il nome, dal fiume Bagnone, sormontato del bellissimo Castello, e pieno di dimore storiche quali quelle dei Quartieri, la famiglia che ha anche costruito il teatro recentemente restaurato, Barga, borgo fortificato ai confini della Garfagnana, da sempre Mediceo, con il famoso duomo Romanico di San Cristoforo e il Teatro dei Differenti, costruito
dai Medici nel 1795 sul luogo dove sorgeva il primo teatro in legno del 1560, e Cutigliano, stazione di villeggiatura montana sia estiva che invernale, con un centro storico intatto dominato dalla Palazzo dei Capitani, sede della capitaneria Medicea della Montagna Pistoiese. Il proposito dell’Ensemble, e la ragione che li tiene uniti, è la convinzione che possano essere i musicisti, rigorosamente senza direttore, a creare e concepire musica, utilizzando alcune tecniche particolari quali l’arcata libera, che impongono una diversa responsabilità del singolo verso il gruppo. Le prove sono poche, le esecuzioni molte, e il livello sempre alto grazie all’attenzione e alla capacità di questi giovani strumentisti di calarsi immediatamente nel modo di fare musica d’insieme proposto da Simone Bernardini, nel solco di quella tradizione di musica da camera di cui Norbert Brainin rappresenta un capostipite e il suo mentore.

Nel 2006 il progetto, intitolato per l’occasione “Mozart nei Borghi” ha presentato una esecuzione integrale dei concerti per pianoforte e orchestra di W. A. Mozart, con pianisti di fama internazionale insieme a giovani promesse. Le esecuzioni si sono svolte nei tre luoghi, generando un interesse ed un seguito veramente straordinari. Dall’esperienza è stato tratto un documentario diretto da Stefano Missio intitolato “Da grande suonerò Mozart”, con interviste ai pianisti, prove, esecuzioni ed un tentativo, molto riuscito, di captare lo spirito che Opera Barga insieme a Simone Bernardini riesce a infondere a questo progetto. Per il 2007 i musicisti si concentreranno invece sulla figure di Bach e Vivaldi senza dimenticare Mozart.. Ad affiancare Simone Bernardini quest’anno si aggiungono anche Lorenza Borrani, giovane spalla dell’orchestra Toscanini di Parma e Carrie Dennis, spalla delle viole dei Berliner Philarmoniker. Per il resto i programmi li sviluppano gli strumentisti insieme alla direzione musicale del Festival, in modo da soddisfare la loro voglia di nuove sfide, ma con un occhio di riguardo per il divertimento loro e del pubblico. Ai musicisti dell’Ensemble si aggiungono inoltre i pianisti del progetto Pianobarga 2007, giunto alla sua quarta edizione e che quest’anno propone concerti di Jin Ju, Andrea Bacchetti, Vanessa Benelli Mosell e Alessandro Pomellato.
