Normally one of the most vital parts of Barga Jazz Festival which finished last night was not to be found in the piazzas or as part of the concerts in the Teatro dei Differenti but during the late night jam sessions that take place each evening at the Enojazz Club. The musicians who spent each day rehearsing as part of the Barga Jazz Orchestra and then performing in the evening at the concerts would at the end of the shows towards midnight, move across to the EnoJazz After Hours Club and carry on playing until early in the morning only to rise bleary eyed later on that day and repeat the whole process all over again. A feat of endurance that only the strongest can survive as the Barga Jazz festival moved into the second week.
This year was different. For a series of logistical problems there was no actually physical space in Barga in which to house the Eno Jazz Club. The after hours sessions did not take place.
That is until the last two days of the festival when into the breach stepped the Maracas Club in Fornaci di Barga who offered their premises to the late night after hours sessions.
It has to said that the final session did not run right through till dawn, as tradition demands but there were enough musicians with enough energy left to play until nearly 4 am this morning.
Most were there to just enjoy playing with like minded people but some had a more serious intent -- the win the coverted Silvano Togneri Prize, awarded each year for the best soloist showing his heart, spirit (and stamina) during the marathon enojazz after hours jam sessions.
In 2007 to commemorate the passing of Silvano Togneri the outsider musician (articles about Silvano Togneri can be found here) who was a key member of many of the after hour sessions in the past, the prize was renamed the Silvano Togneri prize and instead of a nominal award an actual award was handed to the winner -- a bottle of spumante and a 45 rpm disc from Silvano’s own collection ( an article about Silvano’s record collection here)
This year it was a close fought affair with the counting (and subtraction) of votes by JJ Carde taking place right through the night.
The Silvano Togneri prize 2010 was awarded this morning for the best soloist during the enojazz after hours jam sessions to the trumpet player from Viareggio- Alessio Bianchi

Steve Swallow in Palazzo Pancrazi
A busy day for Steve Swallow, the world famous bass player who is here in Barga for the Barga Jazz Festival 2010 dedicated to him and his music.
His day started with a masterclass for students studying electric bass with the man who has long been many jazz critics’ favourite electric bassist for, rather than playing his instrument in a rock-oriented manner, Swallow is known for emphasizes the high notes and approaches the electric bass, to an extent, as if it were a guitar.
At midday he was in Palazzo Pancrazi to meet the Mayor of Barga, Marco Bonini along with Alessandro Rizzardi, artistic director of the festival, Bruno Tommaso the conductor and members of the Barga Jazz Orchestra including Pietro Tonolo the sax player.
This afternoon, back in the Teatro dei Differenti for a conference and final summing up of the masterclass and then this evening the final concert for the Barga Jazz festival 2010

Pietro Tonolo was born in Mirano (Venice) in 1959, and began to play jazz professionally in 1979, leaving behind an alredy blossoming career as a classical violinist. Moving to Milan in 1979, he there worked with some of the leading Italian jazz musicians including Franco D’Andrea, Luigi Bonafede, Gianni Cazzola, Larry Nocella, Massimo Urbani. From 1981 to 1986 he was often a member of Enrico Rava’s group. In the summer of 1982 he played in the “Gil Evans Orchestra” with musicians such as Steve Lacy, Lew Soloff and Ray Anderson; he also played with this ensamble at the “Sweet Basil” in New York in 1984/85 and at the “Umbria Jazz Festival” in 1987.
In 1983 he began performing, both as the leader of his own groups and as a sideman, in jazz clubs, at concerts, and on television and radio broadcast throughout Europe and in the United States. He has worked with Kenny Clarke, Roswell Rudd, Sal Nistico, Chet Baker (who he played with in New York in 1985), Lee Konitz, John Surman, George Lewis, Barry Altschul, Joe Chambers, Aldo Romano, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland and Tony Oxley, to name just some. Two albums with a stellar line-up consisting of Gil Goldstein on piano, Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Motian on drums also garner attention by their sheer vibrancy.
In 1986 he began a intense working relationship with the Roman pianist Rita Marcotulli, playing both in a duet with her and a quartet with Enzo Pietropaoli and Roberto Gatto, wich has received acclaim from critics and the public alike. Since 1988, he has collaborated with Henri Texier’s group (with which he performed in France, Italy, Mexico, Cuba and Egypt) with Enrico Pieranunzi and Giovanni Tommaso, as well as leading his own groups (with Piero Leveratto, Sandro Gibellini, Alfred Kramer and Roberto Rossi), and playing and writing for the big band “Keptorchestra” and the sax quartet “Arundo Donax”.
He has performed at all the most important Italian jazz festivals and at the “Jazz Festival” in Berlin , the “Jazz Jamboree” in Warsaw, the “Grand Parade du Jazz” in Nice and at festivals in Paris, Montreal, Vienna, Amiens, The Hague, North Caroline, Ankara, Izmir and Tel Aviv.

The Barga Jazz festival 2010 moved up a gear this evening with the Barga Jazz Orchestra, conducted as ever by Bruno Tommaso, performing 6 arrangements for music written by Steve Swallow. The man himself was fronting the orchestra with his 5 string acoustic bass guitar.

Question: When did you pick up the electric bass
Steve Swallow: I resisted the electric bass on principle for years. I refused to touch one. I had the usual jazz musician’s attitude toward electric instruments and rock and roll. I was working with Gary Burton. This would have been in late 1969 and we were doing a NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show. I guess it was an early NAMM show, all the instrument manufacturers and Gary was doing demonstrations and brought me along so he didn’t have to play solo and so the two of us were playing, playing twenty minutes, taking an hour off, playing twenty minutes all day long in a giant exposition place in Chicago. Midway through the second day, I was bored to tears and I had done everything, but gone into the Fender booth and so I went over there during one of our breaks and I made sure that nobody saw me. I ditched Gary and kind of snuck over. It was really like going into a peepshow or something. I looked stealthfully around to make sure nobody saw me and then split very quickly into the Fender booth. I picked up a Fender bass and the same thing happened. My fingers sent an immediate message to my brain and saying that we liked this. We want to do this. My brain was appalled and said no, but the dye had been cast. I went to the Gibson booth and did the same thing and preferred the Gibson instrument and so I asked them if I could take it back to the hotel and they said, “Sure.” I took it back to the hotel and took the instrument out of its case and played it for what I thought was about twenty minutes. I looked up and looked at the clock and a couple of hours had gone by. There was no turning back. It was a very base and physical attraction that I just couldn’t deny. Luckily, Gary was very supportive of all of this and receptive to the idea of using it in the band. So I began just using it on one or two tunes a night and it just gradually grew to the point where I was using it on more tunes than I was using the acoustic bass and then I moved to California with my family for a variety of reasons, but among them, to really learn to play the electric bass. At that point, I felt that I couldn’t play both the acoustic and electric any longer. There just weren’t enough hours in the day. I was just constantly guilty as well, when I was playing one, I saw the other sitting in the corner looking forlorn and very conflicted and so eventually, I got rid of my acoustic bass and I haven’t had one since and I haven’t regretted doing that either.
Question: Your approach to playing the electric is unique in that you play it as if it were a guitar.
STEVE SWALLOW: I think it is. You would think I would play it as if it were a bass, but I think one of the things that drew me to the instrument initially was physically, the guitar aspect of it. I loved manipulating that instrument. Initially, I played with my fingers, but fairly shortly, after I began playing the electric bass, I discovered the pick and discovered that I preferred that, that I liked the way I could articulate with the pick and I preferred the sound that I got. I was lucky to play with a succession of wonderful guitar players, starting with Jim Hall, but in the Burton band there was an endless string of them, starting with Larry Coryell and I was able to have a twenty-four hour question answering service available to me at any time and endless examples of how to manipulate the instruments. I empathized strongly with the guitaristic approach physically. On the other hand, I have also kind of insisted whenever anybody asks over the years, that it is a bass, that even though it doesn’t look like an acoustic bass and sound like an acoustic bass, it is there to perform the same functions. The day before I first played the electric bass, I loved Paul Chambers and the day I first played the electric bass, I still loved Paul Chambers and nothing changed. I didn’t take up the electric bass to effect a change in the idiom that I was playing. I had no desire to do that what so ever. I just wanted to bring the electric bass to the idiom that I always loved. – source
Barga Jazz Festival – Andrea Fascetti Quartet
Andrea Fascetti was last playing in Barga at the Barga Jazz Club during the Autumn of 2009. (article here) where he performed some of the music from his CD “Dedicated to Steve” This evening he returned to the city and this time in front of a larger audience at the Teatro dei Differenti and with his quartet playing for the first concert of the Barga Jazz Festival 2010 dedicated to the very man who inspired that CD -- Steve Swallow.
Stasera 25 agosto 2010, nella storica cornice del Teatro dei Differenti, sarà la volta di Andrea Fascetti Quartet: Andrea Fascetti (basso elettrico), Andrea Garibaldi (pianoforte), Riccardo Fioravanti (contrabbasso), Massimo Manzi (batteria). Andrea Fascetti, già vincitore dell’edizione di BargaJazz nel 1996 con il trio di Riccardo Arrighini, suona il basso elettrico e il contrabbasso. l concerto, che è fuori concorso, sarà una presentazione da parte di Andrea Fascetti e della sua band del proprio lavoro uscito nel 2008 e dedicato alla musica di Steve Swallow. Questa serata d’interludio, introduce la fase clou del festival con le serate in cui si esibirà l’ospite d’onore Steve Swallow e l’Orchestra BargaJazz diretta dal Maestro Bruno Tommaso.
Sono rimasto subito folgorato dalla musica di Steve: melodie bellissime,strutture armoniche incredibili…..Erano gli anni della fusion ma Steve era un bassista elettrico che suonava jazz……fantastico!!!!!!Steve è stato l’unico bassista elettrico che si è guadagnato la stima totale dal mondo del jazz. In questi anni in cui ho cercato la mia strada musicale,ho pensato spesso a Steve Swallow come un esempio da seguire…… ( A. Fascetti )
Mr. Fascetti plays an electric seven string bass and would seem an honorable disciple of the Steve Swallow style of playing bass as an electric guitar. Fascetti has developed a bold arch top sound, somewhere in the median of a Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell flavour. The music flows with passion, the sounds are delightful, a stirring tribute. ( Paul J. The Barga Jazz Festival moves into the second evening dedicated to the Barga Jazz Contest. This contest was started at a competition for the best young emerging jazz bands and has been running right through the winter at the Barga Jazz club.

Pianista, giovane promessa del jazz italiano dal virtuosismo vulcanico ma con uno spiccato senso del lirismo e della raffinatezza stilistica. Vincitore nel 2008 con il suo trio (Dario Carnovale trio) del concorso per nuovi talenti del jazz italiano Chicco Bettinardi nella sezione gruppi nel 2007 ha rappresentato l’italia al meeting internazionaole della IASJ diretta da Dave Liebman a seguito della prestigiosa borsa di studio vinta a Siena Jazz l’anno prima. Il primo disco nel 2000 dedicato al compositore Leo Brower In Collaborazione con Marco Cappelli Ha inciso due lavori a suo nome il primo con il Dario Carnovale trio “Pensieri Notturni” live 2007 uscito per la comar23 con Simone Serafini (bass) e Luca Colussi (drum) il secondo nel 2008 ancora inedito “Exit for three” con Yuri Goloubev e Luca Colussi. An inspirational young artist, Marco Marconi is setting new standards in jazz piano. With Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett as leading influences, Marco uses their incredible work as a basis and builds his own characteristic style above.Performing regularly throughout his native Umbria and Italy, Marco made a highly successful UK debut at the 2009 Cheltenham Jazz Festival, where “Marco’s performances were the highlight of the fringe festival”.Much of Marco’s time is devoted to composing jazz and his work includes many beautiful ballads, swing, bossa and more…Together with talented contemporaries, Marco has formed his own jazz trio, the Marco Marconi Trio, which perfoms regularly at concerts, private parties, receptions and special events including the international festival, Umbria Jazz, held annually in Perugia. Dopo una prima selezione, effettuata come sempre sulla base delle moltissime registrazioni pervenute alla segreteria, i gruppi si confronteranno adesso dal vivo nel corso di quattro serate al BargaJazz Club. I quattro gruppi che otterranno il maggior punteggio dalla giuria si esibiranno nel corso del BargaJazz Festival alla fine di Agosto. Al gruppo vincitore andrà un premio in denaro di € 2.000 mentre verrà assegnato, al miglior solista tra i gruppi in gara, il premio dedicato a “Luca Flores”, l’eccezionale pianista fiorentino che ha militato nell’Orchestra di BargaJazz nelle prime edizioni del concorso. Negli oltre vent’anni di concorso il Teatro dei Differenti a Barga ha visto passare centinaia di giovani alla ricerca di una vetrina per farsi notare nel campo del jazz. E non di rado nel curriculum dei più importanti jazzisti italiani troviamo una partecipazione al concorso di Barga.

I quattro gruppi che otterranno il maggior punteggio dalla giuria si esibiranno nel corso del BargaJazz Festival alla fine di Agosto. Al gruppo vincitore andrà un premio in denaro di € 2.000 mentre verrà assegnato, al miglior solista tra i gruppi in gara, il premio dedicato a “Luca Flores”, l’eccezionale pianista fiorentino che ha militato nell’Orchestra di BargaJazz nelle prime edizioni del concorso.
Negli oltre vent’anni di concorso il Teatro dei Differenti a Barga ha visto passare centinaia di giovani alla ricerca di una vetrina per farsi notare nel campo del jazz. E non di rado nel curriculum dei più importanti jazzisti italiani troviamo una partecipazione al concorso di Barga.

I ControTempo si formano nel 1995 accomunati dalla passione per la musica, soprattutto per il jazz. All’inizio la band cresce affrontando il repertorio tradizionale di standards americani e altri brani più moderni di impronta funky-blues. I compositori di riferimento di questo periodo del gruppo sono: Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock e Mike Stern. Successivamente, dopo alcuni cambiamenti di formazione e seguendo un naturale percorso evolutivo, il gruppo allarga i propri orizzonti musicali concentrandosi soprattutto sulla reinterpretazione in chiave sempre piu’ personale di composizioni di autori contemporanei come Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Michel Petrucciani, Ennio Morricone. Raindogs and Beppe Scardino Concert
The Raindogs were last featured on barganews during 2009 when they played a concert in Colognora as part of the BargaJazz turnaround series ( article here) That evening there were only 50 or so in the audience, this evening, the whole Piazza Angelio was packed with people listening to the Raindogs in glorious full swing and enjoying what was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Joining them on stage was Beppe Scardino, the baritone sax player from Livorno.
Il gruppo RAINDOGS vede protagonisti alcuni giovani musicisti che si stanno facendo notare ai più alti livelli del jazz italiano.
Gabrio Baldacci alla chitarra, Mirco Rubegni alla tromba, Simone Padovani alle percussioni, Mirco Capecchi al contrabbasso e Daniele Paoletti alla Batteria. Il progetto è un omaggio alla musica cubana che contamina le sonorità tipiche dei caraibi con il jazz più raffinato.

I was born in Livorno, Tuscany, under the sign of Virgo, but I am living in Bologna.
I have studied with Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, and played in 2002 and 2003 with the congolese artist Goma Parfait Ludovic inside the therapeutic tradition of Kongò cultures.
I attended Master Classes with Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell and Muhal Richard Abrahams.
I graduated in jazz at the “Martini” conservatory in bologna, with a thesis on the last Coltrane.
Recently I’m studying the bass clarinet.
I am a member of the collective-label El Gallo Rojo and of the association of musicians Axè.
I am the leader of the sextet Orange Room.

Barga in jazz 2010
On what was a perfect summer day with blue skies above and not a cloud in the sky, Barga Vecchia was filled with hundreds of people enjoying this year’ Barga in Jazz event. After more than two decades of concentrated effort, planning and a good deal of love from the Rizzardi family, the Barga In Jazz event has turned into the most popular and enjoyable outdoor event here in the city. A dozen hugely different jazz groups playing in all of the piazzas in Barga Vecchia with music ranging from the far edges of jazz as it moves into funk and blues as practised by the Organic Groove to the almost minimalist Buddhist sounds emanating from Vittorio Alinari hidden away in the cool and dark of the Duomo and of course who could not ignore the sound of Aristodemo and his keyboards in Piazza Salvo Salvi.
The ribbon was cut to open the event by the Mayor of Barga, Marco Bonini at 5. 30 to the sound of the P-Funking Band marching band, appearing here in Barga for their third consecutive Barga in Jazz event, Riccardo Giulietti and his men from Perugia kept on playing right through the day and as the sun went down, they were still bouncing around and playing their energetic, exuberant and highly watchable version of jazz in front of the largest crowd of the day.

Barga IN Jazz. (La Festa del Jazz), 22 Agosto 2010. Come ogni anno il centro storico di Barga sarà invaso per un giorno da oltre dieci gruppi Jazz alcuni itineranti. Quella che era nata come una giornata particolare con lo scopo di coinvolgere il grande pubblico in una manifestazione di musica jazz, si è ormai trasformata nella più coinvolgente ed emblematica giornata di tutto il BargaJazz_Festival. E non poteva essere altrimenti perché i numerosi gruppi di musica jazz che si esibiscono nelle varie piazze e piazzette di Barga, creano una atmosfera euforica con la determinante complicità della bellezza naturale del paese.

Antonio Forcione Quartet in Concert
Once again, Antonio Forcione has accepted an invitation to perform a benefit concert to express his love for Africa with his very own creative and exuberant interpretation of the traditional sounds of that continent – whilst at the same time renewing his connection with Barga. For the third time in as many years, Antonio was back in town. A Teatro dei Differenti with standing room only for the ever creative Antonio Forcione and his band. Jenny Adejayan from the UK with her violoncello, the Australian Nathan Thomas on double bass and flute and a new percussionist, Adriano Adewale from Brazil.
All of the proceeds from tonight’s concert will be going towards the AMATAFRICA charity.

Sarà una seconda serata particolare quella di sabato 21 Agosto al Teatro dei Differenti con Antonio Forcione Quartet.
Il chitarrista, ormai londinese d’adozione, è considerato uno dei più importanti sulla scena internazionale. Le sue composizioni imprevedibili, rappresentano la celebrazione di ciò che la vita stessa contiene di inaspettato. I suoi virtuosismi sono influenzati da ritmi brasiliani e nord africani e rendono la sua musica di una delicatezza rara, oltre ad esprimere umorismo e passionalità. L’incasso della serata sarà interamente devoluto all’associazione AMATAFRICA con cui Forcione ha collaborato in diverse occasioni. Una Onlus fondata dal Dottor Lido Stefani che da vari anni finanzia progetti di solidarietà e cooperazione in Rwanda.

Antonio Forcione www.antonioforcione.com Italiano di nascita e Londinese di adozione è un musicista di statura mondiale, un vero virtuoso della chitarra acustica dotato di una tecnica invidiabile capace di portare la chitarra a nuovi livelli di espressione grazie a una miscela di forza melodica e sensazionali effetti di percussione, addentrandosi in territori che, prima di lui, nessun chitarrista aveva osato esplorare, con risultati davvero straordinari. Barga Jazz opens with Maurizio Geri Swing Quintet
The Barga Jazz festival 2010 opened in fine style this evening with the Maurizio Geri Swing Quintet filling the Piazza Angelio in Barga Vecchia with a sound of jazz with a definite European feel. The concert this evening was to celebrate the 100 years since the birth of the Gypsy jazz guitarist, Jean “Django” Reinhardt. One of the first prominent European jazz musicians, Reinhardt remains one of the most renowned jazz guitarists. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, he co -founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, described by critic Thom Jurek as “one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz.” Reinhardt’s most popular compositions have become jazz standards, including “Minor Swing”, “Belleville”, “Djangology”, “Swing ’42″ and “Nuages” (French for “Clouds”).

Venerdì 20 Agosto apertura in Piazza Angelio a Barga con Maurizioes Geri Swing Quintet, un omaggio a Django Reinhardt nel centenario della nascita. Maurizio Geri è uno degli interpreti più importanti del genere a livello nazionale e presenta un repertorio che spazia dalla tradizione manouche a brani originali.
Maurizio Geri (San Marcello Pistoiese, 2 ottobre 1964) è un chitarrista, compositore, cantante e specializzato nei generi della musica popolare e del Gipsy Jazz italiano.
Inizia la carriera collaborando con la cantante ricercatrice Caterina Bueno, in seguito al suo recupero del repertorio musicale tradizionale della Montagna Pistoiese, come componente del Collettivo Folcloristico Montano.
Suonando in varie formazioni ha partecipato a festival di tutta Europa, Australia e Nord America, come il Folkest di Udine, Festival Parthenay (Francia -- 1996), il Clusone Jazz Festival (1997), l’Expo di Lisbona (1998), Festival Django Reinhardt di Samois (Francia 2000), Festival di Sant Chartier (Francia 2000), Festival d’Ete di Québec (Canada -- 2000), Harrison Festival (Canada 2003), Festival di Port Fairy e Blue Mountains (Australia -- 2007) ed ha inciso circa dieci cd (vedi sotto discografia) sotto varie etichette.
