The link between Barga and Scotland just keeps on getting stronger and involving not just meetings or music or food but now also other far different mediums and methods. This time we are talking about a collaboration on the planning and making of new tapestry, depicting the history of the Scots emigrating to other countries. This tapestry is going to be exhibited in 2014, the next year of Scottish Homecoming. It is also going to travel to all those places where Scots are to be found, e.g. Barga.
The Prestonpans Tapestry is a large embroidery created and normally situated in Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland. The Prestonpans Tapestry is the brainchild of the Prestongrange Arts Festival, the Battle of Prestonpans 1745 Heritage Trust, the former Chairman of the Trust (Gordon Baron Prestoungrange), and the designer Andrew Crummy.
The design, size and style were inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry; however, the Prestonpans version deals with the events before, during and after the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745.
The Tapestry is – like the Bayeux Tapestry – an embroidered cloth, rather than a woven tapestry. It is annotated in English. More than two hundred embroiderers created the work over a two year period; about half of these reside in Scotland, but other participants have come from as far as New Zealand.
The complete artwork measures 104 metres (341 ft), and it consists of 103 panels, each about one metre long. It is about 30 metres (98 ft) longer than the Bayeux example. The site is here

The completed work was unveiled on July 26, 2010, at Cockenzie power station near Prestonpans and has travelled around Britain until September 2010 when it returned to Prestonpans to coincide with the Battlefield Trust’s annual commemoration of the Battle of Prestonpans. Further opportunities to exhibit the work have included the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Storytelling Centre. At present it is on show at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh (Episcopal), Edinburgh, to coincide with the Edinburgh Festival.
So far , so good, but now comes the really interesting part. The Prestongrange Arts Festival are now organising the making of another tapestry and this one is intended to be even larger than the Prestonpans Tapestry. As part of the Scotland homecoming event in 2012 the organisers are intending to have ready, finished and on show a completely new tapestry depicting the events of the Scottish diaspora. Barga with its long history of movement between the city and Scotland has been given the chance to contribute to this exciting project with a series of embroidered panels in the tapestry.
Professor Petra Wend, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland was here in the city this week coordinating just what information and images should be embroidered in the Barga panels and also looking for volunteers to actually do the work. Once consultations are completed, the main design will be done by the Scottish artists Andrew Crummy who will print his finished image onto the linen panels and which along with the needles, wool and thread will then sent to the volunteers so that they can start work stitching the final panels.

A Prestonpans, nella contea scozzese di East Lothian, con un lungo lavoro durato due anni e condotto da almeno duecento ricamatrici è stato realizzato un enorme ricamo che ha preso il nome di “Arazzo di Prestonpans”, Prestonpans Tapestry.
Questo magnifico lavoro è nato da un’idea del Prestongrange Arts Festival e dal “Battle of Prestonpans 1745 Heritage Trust”, dal suo presidente Gordon Baron Prestoungrange, e del designer Andrew Crummy e vuole ricordare il viaggio del giovane “Bonnie Prince Charlie” che dalla Francia si concluse con una battaglia proprio a Prestonpans nel 1745.
Il disegno, le dimensioni e lo stile sono state ispirate dall’Arazzo di Bayeux, un analogo lavoro molto più antico custodito nell’omonima cittadina della Normandia che descrive i fatti relativi alla conquista normanna dell’Inghilterra nel 1066. La versione di Prestonspans tratta invece degli eventi occorsi prima, durante e dopo la cosiddetta “Battaglia di Prestonpans” del 1745, e, analogamente a quello di Bayeux, è realizzato con la tecnica del ricamo invece che essere tessuto al telaio ed è composto da 103 pannelli differenti per una lunghezza di 104 metri (trenta in più confronto all’arazzo di Bayeux).

L’idea di rappresentare la Storia in questo modo ha spinto i membri Prestongrange Arts Festival ad ideare e realizzare un nuovo, grande lavoro di ricamo per ripercorrere in questo caso la storia dell’emigrazione e dell’imigrazione scozzese nel mondo.
Anche la Scozia, infatti, ha assistito nei secoli a grandi flussi di persone che alternativamente sono andate lì per cercare fortuna o che l’hanno lasciata per cercarla altrove, tanto che, nel 2009, l’anno del 250° anniversario della scomparsa del Bardo di Scozia Robert Burns, tutto il paese è stato coinvolto nell’anno dell’ “Homecoming” con eventi e inizitive che invitavano al ritorno a casa degli emigranti scozzesi, almeno per qualche giorno.
Nel 2014 si terrà un nuovo evento del genere che coinvolgerà tutte le provincie scozzesi, e per l’occasione sarà presentao l’Arazzo dedicato alla diapsora scozzese.
Per questo Barga avrà di diritto un posto in questo nuovo arazzo, data la connessione iniziata nei secoli scorsi e mai interrotta, e già si stanno progettando almeno sei pannelli che rappresentino la connessione bargo-scozzese, così come altri pannelli saranno dedicati ai legami con altre terre.
A metà luglio due membri del Prestongrange Arts Festival erano a lavoro, proprio qui a Barga, alle prese con due ricami molto eloquenti: la storia del “Fish and Chips”, cavallo di battaglia dei primi emigrati barghigiani in Scozia, ed una barca – quella del nostro stemma – con sulla chiglia riportati i nomi di Barga e di Paisley, una delle cittadine industriali con la maggiore presenta di emigrati barghigiani nel secolo scorso, ma altri soggetti saranno presenti nel lavoro finale, e per questo lanciamo un informale invito alle signore barghigiane in qualche modo legate al mondo scozzese.
In questi giorni è a Barga Petra Wend della Queen Margaret University di Edimburgo per definire i particolari della partecipazione barghigiana alla realizzazione dell’arazzo; in pieno accordo con il Comune si stanno scegliendo gli episodi che maggiormente sottolineano i nostri legami per procedere alla realizzazione dei bozzetti, per i quali esiste già qualche buono spunto.
Nel frattempo bisognerà trovare anche ricamatrici che abbiano l’abilità e d il tempo (per ogni pannello sono necessarie 100 ore di lavoro) per mettersi a lavoro al fine di realizzare i sei pannelli dedicati alla bargo-scozzesità.
Entro settembre un pannello dovrà essere consegnato al Prestongrange Arts Festival come campione, dato che anche il Governo scozzese partecipa finanziariamente al progetto: tutti materiali necessari sono infatti messi a disposizione dell’organizzazione; il tempo necesario per realizzare i ricami sarà invece un regalo agli intrecci storici e culturali che legano Barga e la Scozia.
