A shipwreck. A mysterious cargo. A once wealthy, now ruined Barga family. An elegant villa to protect.
In a very small world the villa had been the grandest, then, little by little the world changed, becoming bigger and suddenly the still elegant villa became so small until it was converted into a third rate hotel, no more elegant and far from the former splendour which would no longer return. After a period of decline it closed down, and that was for the better.
From the research by local historian Antonio Nardini, we learn that the wealthy family was forced to sell everything: houses, small farms and plots in order to save their business following the loss of the ship in which they had invested so much. Just one thing that they didn’t sell: the elegant country house.
The family name was Carrara, the year was 1878, the house was the Villa Libano.
The Carrara’s had built their villa at the end of the 17th century. They were one of the most wealthy families in town (nowadays their dynasty is extinguished). The main family house, which bears the family crest to this day, is close to the Conservatorio S.Elisabetta (in via del Pretorio). Furthermore they had been the owners of so many other properties throughout the valley, including one that, years later, would be sold to the famous poet: Giovanni Pascoli.
Villa Libano was the principal family property, just outside Porta Reale and close to the city walls. The contained also a spinning mill for silkworm production, an activity from which many in the area had made their fortunes.
Nevertheless in that small world, during that time, the villa was used only for the Carrara’s summer holidays.
Through her rooms our history has passed, with its various and tragic twists: nobles, churchmen, freemasons, Garibaldi’s army, republicans, monarchists, various conspirators, but also highwaymen, peasants, simple travellers, partisans, nazis, fascists and allied soldiers. Even the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II, with his wife and the crown princes slept there in 1851 and 1856, during trips to get to know their domain, which, in few short years would no longer remain.
At end of the 1800’s the Carrara family had converted the villa into a luxury hotel, while, on the corner below on Via Marconi, an Osteria was opened. Many wealthy people came, even from outside the region to spend the summer holidays there, until the beginning of the World War II. It was in that period that the villa was renamed Villa Libano, after the splendid cedar tree just in front of the entrance.
This summer something different happened to the Villa Libano. An unforeseen event, on which no-one would have bet even one old Lira. After several changes of management and about six years of complete abandonment, it was brought back to life.
But the new life did not come with the usual tycoon who came from nowhere, and who, once the house was reconditioned disappears and only occasionally comes back to see her, like a beatiful and expensive vintage car parked in a garage.
Villa Libano was reopened for two weeks for Enojazz, the afterhours venue of the BargaJazz Festival (famous for its jam session until dawn) directed by Alessandro Rizzardi for its 26th edition, dedicated to Pietro Tonolo.
Enojazz, as every year, had been declared a thing of the past, as was the villa indeed, and so, why not try to put together two moribund things and see what would (could) be the consequence? Maybe they definitely would have disappeared together…. or perhaps not.
With only three weeks of frenzied work by a dedicated team – Tom McCluskey, the proprietor at Villa Libano, Walter Tognocchi from the Acchiappasogni the luxury bed and breakfast in Barga Vecchia, Riccardo Negri from the L’osteria in Barga Vecchia, Nicola Salotti and Lucia Morelli from the L’associazione culturale Venti d’Arte and the Barga Jazz Volunteers , the villa was reopened to the public. Furthermore, from an idea of the local photographers Keane and Caterina Salvi, the Green Room (the ante-room for the musicians, which they didn’t use) was converted into a photo studio where, with the aid of a LED lighting installation by artist Marco Poma, they produced portraits of anyone who came in.
Conclusion: a great success and kilometres of queues. And then the gardens, always full of people, with music coming from the villa, the laughs and the chatter until late.
It was given up for dead, they were both dead, but in the end something has changed.
Enojazz was brought back to life and the libbanese, I mean the villa, was resurrected as well.

Una nave naufragata. Un carico misterioso. Una ricca famiglia Barghigiana in rovina. Un’elegante villa da salvaguardare.
In un mondo piccolo piccolo la villa era grande, grandissima, poi il mondo piano piano cambiò divenendo più grande e la villa sempre elegante di colpo divenne piccola, piccolissima, fino a trasformarsi in un alberghetto di terz’ordine, stavolta poco elegante e lontanissimo dai fasti di un passato che non sarebbe mai più tornato. Dopo un periodo di agonia chiuse completamente e fu meglio per lei.
Secondo le ricerche effettuate dallo storico locale Antonio Nardini la facoltosa famiglia fu costretta a vendere terreni, poderi, palazzi, case, casette, ville e tutto quanto aveva di più caro per cercare di salvare il salvabile a seguito del naufragio della nave mercantile in cui la famiglia aveva investito molto. Solo una cosa non vendette, la villa di campagna.
La famiglia si chiamava Carrara, l’anno era il 1878, la villa era Villa Libano.
La famiglia Carrara (ormai estinta) costruì la villa nel tardo XVII secolo. Erano una delle famiglie più facoltose della cittadina. Il palazzo di famiglia, dove sono ancora presenti i simboli che contraddistinguevano il casato, era adiacente al Conservatorio di S.Elisabetta. Avevano inoltre infinite proprietà in giro per il comune e la valle, inoltre possedevano anche un’altra villa che tempo dopo fu venduta ad un poeta assai noto, Giovanni Pascoli.
Villa Libano rimaneva però la villa più importante per la famiglia, appena fuori da Porta Reale ed adiacente alle mura cittadine. La villa era dotata anche di una filanda per la produzione del baco da seta, industria che aveva fatto la fortuna di molti nella zona. In quel mondo piccolo piccolo la villa era utilizzata prevalentemente per le vacanze estive della famiglia Carrara.
Nelle sue stanze è passata quella che è stata la nostra storia in tutte le sue molteplici e tragiche varianti: nobili, uomini di chiesa, massoni, garibaldini, repubblicani, monarchici, cospiratori di varia forma e sostanza e anche briganti, contadini, semplici viandanti, partigiani, nazisti, fascisti e alleati. Anche il Granduca di Toscana Leopoldo II con consorte e principi ereditari vi soggiornarono nel 1851 e1856, durante una serie di viaggi per conoscere meglio il loro regno, che da lì a poco non sarebbe stato più.
La famiglia Carrara sul finire dell’800 convertì la villa in un lussuoso albergo, mentre sull’angolo con via Marconi fu aperta un’osteria. Molte erano le persone benestanti che provenivano anche da fuori regione a villeggiare durante i mesi estivi sino allo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale. Fu in questo periodo che prese il nome di Libano, dal grosso cedro che fu piantato sul bastione adiacente.
Poi quest’estate è successo qualcosa di diverso alla villa. E’ successo una cosa inaspettata su cui nessuno avrebbe mai scommesso una lira, dopo i cambi di gestione vari e circa 6 anni di chiusura totale, ha ripreso vita.
Però non ha ripreso vita con il solito magnate di turno venuto da chissà dove che una volta risistemata la chiude e svanisce nel nulla e di tanto in tanto ritorna a vedere come sta, come una bella e costosa macchina d’epoca parcheggiata in garage.
Villa Libano è stata riaperta per due settimane ospitando l’Enojazz, il dopo festival di BargaJazz diretto da Alessandro Rizzardi e quest’anno giunto alla sua 26°edizione dedicata a Pietro Tonolo, con le sue jam session che tirano fino alla mattina.
Come ogni anno l’Enojazz lo davano per spacciato, come la villa del resto, e allora perché non unire due cose oramai spacciate e vedere che effetto facevano insieme? Magari era la volta che sparivano definitivamente entrambe o magari no.
Con un lavoro frenetico da parte di Tom McCluskey, the proprietor at Villa Libano, Walter Tognocchi from the Acchiappasogni the luxury bed and breakfast in Barga Vecchia, Riccardo Negri from the L’osteria in Barga Vecchia, Nicola Salotti and Lucia Morelli from the L’associazione culturale Venti d’Arte and the Barga Jazz Volunteers, in sole tre settimane parte della villa è stata resa fruibile al pubblico. Inoltre, in corso d’opera, grazie all’ingegno dei fotografi Keane e Caterina Salvi, è stata riconvertita la Green Room (il camerino allestito per i musicisti ma che questi non usavano) in uno studio fotografico dove, grazie ad un’istallazione a led realizzata da Marco Poma, si sono fatti ritratti a chiunque si presentasse. Conclusione: successone. Code chilometriche per farsene fare uno. E poi il parco, sempre pieno di persone, la musica che usciva dalle stanze, le risate e le chiacchiere fino a tardi.
Era data per morta, erano dati per morti, ma alla fine qualcosa è cambiato.
L’Enojazz ha ripreso vita e la libbanese, nel senso della villa, pure.
