It features historical novels, genealogy, and social history about Italian migration to Britain, which according to Robert Rossi is one of the great unexamined chapters of modern European history.
Around the turn of the twentieth century, tens of thousands of people walked out of the Tuscan and Lazio mountains and changed the social fabric of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Carlisle, Liverpool and London.
Robert Rossi was born in Glasgow, the son of Italian parents from Barga, a fortified hilltop town in Tuscany’s Serchio valley. Like tens of thousands of Barghigiani before them, they left for Scotland in search of work and a future — bringing him into a city whose ice-cream parlours, fish-and-chip shops and Sunday afternoon cafés had been built, almost street by street, by families from his own home village.
For most of his life, Robert worked in business. The family stories were everywhere around him — over coffee, in Italian sentences he half-understood, in photographs of relatives he’d never met. But like many second-generation children of migrants, he assumed someone else would write them down.
Then, by chance, he discovered a distant cousin he had never known: Fusilier Dennis Donnini. Nineteen years old. Five foot tall. The youngest soldier of the entire Second World War to be awarded the Victoria Cross — the British Empire’s highest honour for valour. Buried in the Netherlands. The Donnini family had emigrated from the same valley as Robert’s own grandparents, and had settled in a Durham mining village barely thirty minutes’ drive from Robert’s later home in England.
He had walked past Dennis’s story for half a lifetime without knowing it.

That decision became Italian Blood, British Heart — the first novel of what is now The Blood Heart Trilogy. Book two, Jewish Blood, Italian Heart, is loosely based on the life of Robert’s own grandfather and travels across four continents in pursuit of safety. The third book is in progress.
Today Robert lives in the UK. He returns regularly to Barga, where about sixty per cent of residents still claim Scottish relatives, and where you might still — improbably, beautifully — hear a Glaswegian accent in a café.

Il sito presenta romanzi storici, genealogia e studi di storia sociale sull’emigrazione italiana verso la Gran Bretagna, che secondo Robert Rossi rappresenta uno dei grandi capitoli poco esaminati della storia europea moderna.
Tra la fine dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento, decine di migliaia di persone lasciarono le montagne della Toscana e del Lazio, cambiando il tessuto sociale di Glasgow, Edimburgo, Newcastle, Carlisle, Liverpool e Londra.
Robert Rossi è nato a Glasgow, figlio di genitori italiani originari di Barga, città fortificata sulle colline della Valle del Serchio in Toscana. Come decine di migliaia di barghigiani prima di loro, partirono per la Scozia in cerca di lavoro e di un futuro — portandolo in una città i cui gelatai, fish-and-chip shop e caffè della domenica pomeriggio erano stati costruiti, quasi strada per strada, da famiglie provenienti dal suo stesso paese d’origine.
Per gran parte della sua vita Robert ha lavorato nel mondo degli affari. Le storie di famiglia erano ovunque intorno a lui — davanti a un caffè, nelle frasi italiane che comprendeva solo a metà, nelle fotografie di parenti che non aveva mai conosciuto. Ma come molti figli di seconda generazione di emigranti, pensava che sarebbe stato qualcun altro a raccontarle.
Poi, quasi per caso, scoprì un lontano cugino di cui non aveva mai sentito parlare: il Fuciliere Dennis Donnini. Diciannove anni. Alto appena un metro e cinquanta. Il più giovane soldato dell’intera Seconda Guerra Mondiale ad aver ricevuto la Victoria Cross — la più alta onorificenza britannica al valore militare. Sepolto nei Paesi Bassi. La famiglia Donnini era emigrata dalla stessa valle dei nonni di Robert e si era stabilita in un villaggio minerario della contea di Durham, a meno di trenta minuti di auto dalla futura casa inglese di Robert.
Per metà della sua vita era passato accanto alla storia di Dennis senza saperlo.

Quella decisione divenne Italian Blood, British Heart — il primo romanzo di quella che oggi è conosciuta come The Blood Heart Trilogy. Il secondo libro, Jewish Blood, Italian Heart, è liberamente ispirato alla vita del nonno di Robert e attraversa quattro continenti alla ricerca della salvezza. Il terzo volume è attualmente in lavorazione.
Oggi Robert vive nel Regno Unito. Torna regolarmente a Barga, dove circa il sessanta per cento dei residenti sostiene ancora di avere parenti scozzesi e dove può ancora capitare — in modo improbabile ma bellissimo — di sentire un accento di Glasgow in un caffè.
