The city of Barga carries more than a thousand years of history within its walls. Over the centuries, it has been shaped, rebuilt and reimagined into the form we recognise today — a walled city rising towards the Duomo, which still presides over it all.
Yet beneath this familiar landscape lies another Barga, largely unseen and little understood.
Hidden below the streets and buildings of the historic centre, there are accounts of tunnels and passageways — a network that, according to local memory, once linked important houses and extended beyond the city walls.
These routes may have served as discreet lines of movement, offering escape and protection in more uncertain times.
Drawing on testimonies, recollections and fragments of oral history, Pier Giuliano Cecchi has begun to trace this underground world, piecing together a version of Barga that exists just out of sight.

La città di Barga racchiude tra le sue mura una storia che supera i mille anni. Nel corso dei secoli è stata modellata, ricostruita e trasformata fino a diventare la città che oggi riconosciamo — un centro storico cinto da mura che sale verso il Duomo, ancora dominante su tutto.
Eppure, sotto questo paesaggio familiare, esiste un’altra Barga, in gran parte invisibile e poco conosciuta.
Sotto le strade e gli edifici del centro storico si tramandano racconti di cunicoli e passaggi sotterranei — una rete che, secondo la memoria locale, collegava alcune delle principali abitazioni e si estendeva oltre le mura cittadine. Percorsi che, forse, servivano come vie riservate di spostamento, offrendo rifugio e possibilità di fuga in tempi più incerti.
Attraverso testimonianze, ricordi e frammenti di tradizione orale, Pier Giuliano Cecchi ha iniziato a ricostruire questo mondo sotterraneo, componendo un’immagine di Barga che esiste appena fuori dallo sguardo.
